80 years ago, the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration and extermination camp was freed from the Red Army. More than a million people were murdered in this place alone: Jews, Roma, Sinti, homosexuals, politically persecuted and many other groups. All victims of the millions of industrial mass murder by the National Socialists are commemorated on the International Holocaust Memorial Day.
“Especially at a time when we are at the beginning of the term of office of a right -wing extremist Chancellor, affected commemoration alone is not enough. The Holocaust did not start with Auschwitz, but with a policy of dehumanization, hatred and agitation, with the destruction of democracy and its institutions as well as the free media. The crucial question is how it could come about and what happened before the millions of murder. Today, more than ever, it is about pulling the right teachings from the past and taking responsibility for their own actions, ”says Lukas Hammer, spokesman for the Greens.
“Democracy, freedom and humanity in a solidary society are not a matter of course. They have to be fought and defended again and again. The FPÖ is the parliamentary arm of right -wing extremism in Austria and a structurally anti -Semitic party. The Austrian right-wing extremism report and the cases of Hitler worship at FPÖ candidate: inside the Lower Austrian local council elections again proved this last week. Anyone who leaves the Chancellery of this party can save themselves their affected gestures, ”Hammer concludes.
