Local council chairman Thomas Reindl (SPÖ) emphasizes the importance of the Vienna city constitution
Vienna (OTS/SPW) – “The Vienna City Constitution and the Rules of Procedure of the City Council of the City of Vienna are among the most important foundations of our city. Both our mayor and we as members of the Vienna City Council are obliged to act in accordance with these legal requirements. For this reason, I have asked the municipal administration to examine the request for the FPÖ to hold a local council meeting. This assessment has shown that the application for the requested special municipal council meeting will not be permitted,” states Thomas Reindl, Chairman of the Vienna Municipal Council (SPÖ).
With the above-mentioned topic of “excessive violence by asylum seekers in Vienna”, the Viennese FPÖ is essentially addressing the issues of public security, criminal law and the asylum system. “Maintaining public peace, order and security are important issues that need to be addressed. However, as the Vienna municipal council, we have to adhere to legal requirements and it should be clearly stated that these are federal matters in terms of legislation and enforcement,” emphasizes Reindl. In this case, there was no enforcement by the municipality within its own sphere of influence. “Criminal courts, federal security authorities and the federal asylum authority are responsible for this,” explains Reindl.
“The Vienna Municipal Council exercises overall supervision in matters within the municipality’s own sphere of activity and is therefore only responsible for municipal affairs and not for federal agendas. I call on the FPÖ to move back towards the constitution of the city of Vienna and to adapt its style and tone to the dignity of the local council.
