This fall, over 1,300 learning assistance courses from Vienna adult education centers, VHS learning stations and online courses offer free support in mathematics, German, English and German Start for children who are new to learning German.
Vice Mayor and City Councilor for Education Christoph Wiederkehr: “In Vienna, all children should have the same opportunities for the future and education is the key to getting ahead in life. It is particularly important to us that all children in our city learn the German language at an early age. Because there is a high demand here, we have expanded the “Deutsch Start” subject by 20 percent as part of the Vienna Learning Aid. There are 12 additional courses available this fall with up to 120 places.”
The Vienna Learning Aid is funded by the City of Vienna and implemented by the Vienna Adult Education Centers since 2015.
VHS managing director Herbert Schweiger: “Many families cannot afford private tutoring and not all parents can help their children learn. The City of Vienna’s funding ensures that all children, regardless of their parents’ home, receive support in their school success and have positive learning experiences.”
The Vienna Learning Aid addresses the individual needs of students using different formats and offers both long- and short-term support.
1,000 learning support courses plus online courses for secondary level 1
Over 1,000 VHS learning support courses in mathematics, German, English and German Start for more than 10,000 secondary school students (10 – 14 years) regularly support them in learning a specific subject. They take place once a week at schools in Vienna and last two teaching units. Here, students can further develop their learning techniques and consolidate what they have learned in the long term.
If you prefer to learn from home, you can take one of the 100 online courses available in the same subjects. These last one hour each and also promote digital skills.
LernMinis: Learning assistance courses for 1,500 primary school students
For elementary school students, 150 courses are offered for up to 1,500 students. Here, learning content in the subjects of German, mathematics and German Start is developed in a playful way. The courses last 1.5 hours each and take place primarily at VHS locations, but also at individual school locations.
In order to provide the students with the best possible support, all learning support courses are taught in small groups of a maximum of 10 participants. A maximum of 7 students take part in online courses.
Uncomplicated help in the afternoon at the 18 VHS learning stations
The VHS learning stations offer uncomplicated support for questions about the learning material, homework or school work preparation. They are open to students from middle schools and AHS lower grades and take place directly at 18 VHS locations. The VHS learning stations are an open offer for anyone who needs quick help or has questions in several subjects. Students can switch between different subjects on the same day and stay until their questions are answered. No registration is necessary here. The VHS learning stations take place from Monday to Thursday between 2.30 p.m. and 5.30 p.m. (except on school-free days and during the holidays).
