Real circular economy with the 48er: From the organic waste bin to the flowerbed | City vienna

The flower and garden soil from 48 “Guter Grund” closes the cycle of nature. It is now available again.

Vienna (OTS) Just in time for the beginning of the gardening year, the 48-grain “Guter Grund” soil is available again at all Viennese manure sites and in the 48-grain tandler. The peat-free soil, which is created from garden waste, apple cleaning, lettuce leaves and other biogenic waste from the over 90,000 organic bins in the green belt, closes the cycle of nature in an environmentally friendly and natural way. For Climate City Councilor Jürgen Czernohorszky, this is a real circular economy: “The high-quality and regional Viennese flower and garden soil is a ‘good reason’ for the Viennese to use the organic waste bin. Everyone who disposes of their garden and kitchen waste in the organic waste bin is making an important contribution to the circular economy and thus to climate protection.” The circle then finally closes with the use of high-quality soil in your own garden or on your balcony.

Excellent quality: organic, regional, environmentally friendly

The starting material for the potting soil is more than 100,000 tons organic waste, which the 48er collects in over 90,000 organic waste bins in the city’s green belt. This is produced in the largest composting plant in Europe, the city’s own Lobau composting plant, between 40,000 and 50,000 tons of A+ quality compost annually. The earth is then mixed in the company’s earthworks Compo in the 22nd district. This means that the entire organic cycle – from collection in the organic waste bin to processing the soil – takes place in Vienna. The shortest transport routes are therefore secured. The addition of mineral fertilizer and peat is completely avoided during production. Both are important factors for climate protection. The peat-free soil of the 48er consists of 100 percent natural ingredients and meets the strict requirements of the Austrian Ecolabel. The quality criteria ensure a balanced supply of nutrients, ensure high plant growth and offer a sustainable soil alternative. The “Guter Grund” soil can be used for all home and garden plants, for potting and repotting flowering and garden plants, and for improving the soil in flower and vegetable beds.

From mid-February to October 2024, the peat-free 48-gauge soil “Guter Grund” is available at all Viennese manure sites and in the 48-gauge tandler in Margareten and Donaustadt.
