Let’s go towards summer with the city of Vienna libraries: a little adventure around Kim-a child on a magical journey. The summer reading club of libraries is calling. The collection adventure of the libraries for children and adolescents will start from Monday, June 16. With a PickerLheft that is available in every library of the city of Vienna, everyone can collect Pickerl between 6 and 14 years until September 12th. In the end, not only prices must be won, but also to pick up a reading certificate. This year’s Pickerlheft Carmen Tung wrote and drawn. She lives in Vienna and likes to experiment with different drawing media, but its strength lies in the digital illustration. “Kim’s trip” leads in a new city in a slightly different summer vacation. While others go on vacation, Kim is in the jungle and by the sea, meets magical beings in the forest and goes on a treasure hunt with brave pirates. And all of this in just a very special place: the big library.
Vice Mayor and City Councilor for Education and Youth Bettina Emmerling: “The summer reading club of libraries is a small admission ticket to a large universe. Just like Kim in the history of Carmen Tung, the libraries motivate children and adolescents to use the book during the holiday season or to lose themselves in one of the 37 libraries of the city of Vienna. Reading opens up new worlds and promotes creativity, language acquisition and reading strength. Pickerheft.
Elisabeth Fuchs, education director for Vienna: “If you open a book, you immerse yourself in stories and other worlds. In addition, reading promotes the imagination and is the basis for learning. Reading supports language skills and is an important prerequisite for critical and creative media use as well as social participation.”
Whoever reads in summer is ahead in autumn
The summer reading club not only offers leisure fun. The reading certificate contained in the picker booklet can be presented at school as proof of extra -curricular reading engagement. So if you have your reading certificate in the new school year, you have not only spent exciting and entertaining hours, but also advantages in class. The Summer Reading Club of the libraries is supported by the Education Directorate for Vienna. The summer reading club has been taking place in Vienna since summer 2012. Last year, over 1,500 children all over Vienna took part.
This is how the Summer Reading Club 2025 works
From June 16, 2025, children and adolescents between the ages of 6 and 14 can get a picker booklet in each library. A valid library card is a prerequisite. This can also be organized simply, because the library card is available free of charge for all up to 18 years. Then it says: Choose something in the library (books and comics, magazines and eBooks, Eaudios and audio books, music and console games, films or events). Say afterwards how you liked it and fill out a rating sheet. For each rating there is a couvert with three surprise pickers for the picker booklet. In the end, everyone who gave a rating in one of the libraries by September 12th take part in a raffle. As always, small prices are waving, including many books. So that the booklet can be filled more easily, exchange exchanges take place in the libraries throughout the summer.
