The first retro boutique hotel on Lake Wolfgang will attract international leisure nomads
Upper Austria/St. Wolfgang am Wolfgangsee (OTS) – Who doesn’t know him: The Franz Antel film “Im Schwarzen Rössl am Wolfgangsee” from 1961, in which Peter Kraus appeared as the ‚dashing Gustl’ sang into the hearts of the ladies. Now the pop star was the guest of honor at the reopening of the legendary hotel on Lake Wolfgangsee on April 25th. So musical sixties feeling met retro chic and Peter Kraus spontaneously enchanted with a show accompanied by electro swing top artist Mr. Harvey Miller.
The approximately 120 invited guests from business, tourism, politics and society, as well as family and friends, were also enthusiastic. They were all happy to come and celebrate together with the hosts Benita and Matthias Hinterberger:
We are overjoyed that we have now been able to realize our idea of a retro boutique hotel on Lake Wolfgang with the ‘Schwarzer Rössl’. Our thanks go to our team and the many hard-working hands who have set up this heartfelt project with us over the last few months – and to the pastor for his blessing
the two agreed.
The star chatted from the inside out: I traveled to the film shoot in my BMW 507 – I had a boat motor in the back seat and my mono water ski in the passenger seat. Within a few days the rumor went around St. Wolfgang that I was water skiing in my car as an amphibious vehicle on Lake Wolfgangsee in the morning.
When I found out that the ‘Schwarzes Rössl’ was reopening and I received the honorary invitation, I immediately and happily accepted. So many memories of the film and the wonderful region.
The evening was full of surprises and was led by a “hotel bellman” who duly entertained the guests as well as the culinary highlights from the Austrian-Spanish tapas kitchen by Nicolas Alandete and his team. There was also a horseshoe forged on site as a special souvenir for the guests.
How did the “Schwarzes Rössl” hotel legend come to life:
The concept of an easy-living life-style hotel, as business travelers and city nomads in urban areas know and appreciate, was to be realized with the new “Schwarzer Rössl” in a classic summer resort region such as the Salzkammergut Matthias Hinterberger, together with his wife Benita, is both a challenge and a project close to his heart.
The chairman of the St. Wolfgang Tourism Association and chairman of the advisory board of Wolfgangsee Tourismus Gesellschaft GmbH has been running the family business in the Berau am Wolfgangsee for many years and has gradually developed it further. The small bed and breakfast with campsite not only became one of the leading camping resorts in Europe: the ambitious tourism expert and self-taught architect today counts, among others, the Seehotel with the Schmankerl-Stube and the pizzeria Hias, Das Franzl, Das Nandl and Das Sigismund to his tourism businesses.
When the aging Hotel Schwarze Rössl was up for sale and the owners at the time, after investor offers from the Emirates and China, were looking for a strong local with a great sense of history and the right nose for tourism innovation, Matthias Hinterberger was the choice With his hands-on mentality it was clear: I’ll do it.
Together with my family and our employees, we have a social responsibility for the region. We see the Black Rössl project as a bang for Lake Wolfgangsee, to encourage others to attack and DO things. St. Wolfgang has repeatedly caused a stir in recent years with its emergence as a lifestyle tourism destination. It was important to me to further strengthen the community feeling of the place with the hotel and its realization and to do the people here good,
he goes into raptures.
Within just a few months, new life has been breathed into the hotel legend on Lake Wolfgangsee since November 2023. The location was originally a blacksmith shop and the core of the building dates back to the end of the 16th century. This old vault was completely revitalized two years ago and returned to its original condition. Since then, chef Nicolas Alandete has been pampering his guests here in the “Genussschmied” restaurant with a fusion of Spanish-Latin American cuisine, paired with Austrian delicacies. The hotel complex, which was built in the 1960s as a result of the hype surrounding the hit film “Im Schwarzen Rössl”, according to the standards of the time, underwent a complete renovation and now shines as the first retro boutique hotel on Lake Wolfgangsee in a well-thought-out, modern style Concept with 27 rooms and suites. With an investment sum of € 5.5 million, the building was structurally upgraded using mostly local trades and brought up to state-of-the-art in terms of building technology and flair. Design, lifestyle and urban chic were at the forefront of the renovation and special attention was therefore paid to high-quality materials and the up-cycling of existing resources. For example, renovated mid-century upholstered furniture finds a new use and a disused shipping container becomes the focal point of the gathering as a wine and day bar. A special highlight is the love suite under the roof with a panoramic view of the three churches in the eastern half of the lake.
We primarily want to appeal to those who prefer easy living. Region lovers who want to spend a good time here at Lake Wolfgangsee with sport, culture and cuisine and experience a mix of urban standards paired with rural warmth
boss Benita Hinterberger sums up the concept of the new Schwarzer Rössl.
