Rally on December 6, 2024 at Vienna City Hall

On December 6, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. at Vienna City Hall, people with disabilities will demand Vienna’s participation in the pilot project to expand and harmonize personal assistance.

Although comprehensive personal assistance is essential for many people with disabilities, the Vienna state government surprisingly and at the last minute refused to participate in the pilot project to expand and harmonize personal assistance. Accession would expand the circle of people with various disabilities who can benefit from personal assistance and end precarious employment relationships. The federal government would have provided the city of Vienna with 52 million euros in funding for this.

„We have never been this close to implementing an Austria-wide, harmonized regulation of personal assistance, namely in all areas of life and regardless of the type of disability“, explains Klaus Widl, President of the Austrian Council for the Disabled.

„In order to enable all Viennese with disabilities to live a self-determined and equal life, Vienna must participate in the pilot project to expand and harmonize personal assistance and also seek long-term regular financing beyond 2026“, so Widl.

“Vienna’s refusal to participate in nationwide personal assistance is preventing necessary progress. As a result, people with disabilities remain trapped in outdated structures“, Roswitha Schachinger, Vice President of the Austrian Council for the Disabled, criticizes the Vienna state government’s rejection.

“52 million euros could have revolutionized personal assistance in Vienna – but Viennese politicians prefer to stand still and ignore“, said Schachinger, who called for participation in the Austrian Council for the Disabled People’s rally in front of Vienna City Hall.
