San Antonio, Chile (ots/PRNewswire) The information event organized by Empresa Portuaria San Antonio in Madrid to present the technical aspects and the main construction works of Puerto Exterior, the most important port project in the history of Chile, with two terminals, each 1,730 meters long and eight berths, with a handling capacity of 6,000,000 TEU, that is, over 60 million tons per year, enabled a successful meeting of companies specialized in the construction of ports, dredging and the development of mega-infrastructures.

The meeting took place as part of the international Call for expressions of interest for the construction of breakwaters and complementary works for Puerto Exterior instead, which was released on April 2nd. Participants included Chilean Minister of Transport and Telecommunications Juan Carlos Muñoz, Chilean Ambassador to Spain Javier Velasco, Spanish port authorities, international banks and executives of engineering and construction companies from several countries.

The event, led by the General Director of Empresa Portuaria San Antonio, Ramón Castañeda, and the Minister, Juan Carlos Muñoz, was attended by more than 70 executives from Spain, France, the Netherlands, Denmark and Belgium, who discussed the characteristics of the project, which about the most important construction work and the associated deadlines and also met with representatives of the Chilean state-owned company to clarify doubts.

Castañeda explained that this milestone “is significant considering that the domestic and international companies we invited to express interest have extensive experience in construction processes. We have a project with very advanced detailed planning. However, for a project of this size, it is important to be able to consult with experts about the best alternatives for carrying out our project.”

The Minister stated: “It is remarkable to see the number of companies that participated in the presentation of Puerto Exterior San Antonio. The same applies to the presence of international banks and organizations that finance such projects. This is a good starting point in the call for expressions of interest for the outer port project, which is the most important port infrastructure project in Chile in a century.”

In connection with the international Call for Expressions of Interest for the construction of breakwaters and complementary works for Puerto Exterior Empresa Portuaria de San Antonio invited national and international companies interested in carrying out the development work of the outer port and the protective quay, the dredging of the dock and the access works and the common support areas of the new mega port terminal. The cost of this work is estimated at USD 1.5 billion and will be financed by the state-owned company.

Concessionary companies will develop the two terminals with an estimated investment of US$2.5 million. In total, investments amount to around US$ 4 billion.

Puerto Exterior is scheduled to begin operations in 2036 and will have the capacity to accommodate state-of-the-art 400-meter container ships.
