From October 14 to December 13, 2024, the Korea Cultural Center will present the exhibition Production Design: Visual Storytelling behind Park Chan-wook’s Cinema. The exhibition provides a fascinating insight into the visual design of Park Chan-wook’s films Decision to Leave (2022) & The Handmaiden (2016) and highlights the central role of production design in powerfully bringing the stories of Park’s award-winning works to life.
An exhibition during the Viennale 2024
The exhibition takes place parallel to the Viennale, the renowned film festival. Visitors to the Viennale have the unique opportunity to delve deeper into the world of visual film design in addition to the film program. Production Design: Visual Storytelling behind Park Chan-wook’s Cinema offers an ideal complement, especially for those interested in the artistic and technical processes behind filmmaking.
Visual storytelling in Korean cinema
Production design is at the heart of a film’s visual aesthetic and significantly shapes the atmosphere, mood and narrative context. Park Chan-wook has been working with Ryu Sung-hee, one of South Korea’s leading production designers, for years. This exhibition is dedicated to their outstanding works and gives visitors a unique insight into the processes behind the visual design of film worlds.
Behind the scenes of Park Chan-wook’s masterpieces
Visitors to the exhibition have the opportunity to experience the creation of Park Chan-wook’s cinematic worlds from a new perspective. From the first draft to the finished set, the exhibition shows how ideas from a script are transformed into impressive visual experiences. Models, sketches and film sets that can be explored with VR glasses convey the complex and often invisible processes that transport the audience into a different reality.
A particular highlight is the examination of the design of central spaces in the two films. For example, the musically inspired room layout in Decision to Leave or the symbolic design of Hideko’s room The Handmaiden thematised. These works have received international recognition, winning awards such as the prestigious Vulcan Prize at the Cannes Film Festival.

The Korea Cultural Center opened in May 2023 and is a central platform for cultural exchange between Korea and Austria. It promotes understanding of Korean culture through a wide range of concerts, exhibitions, events and courses.
