Prize winner of the Mauricio Kagel composition competition chosen

Damian Scholl, João Ricardo, Raphael Vilani Und Sean Cedric Schumann Are the winners of the 6. Mauricio Kagel composition competition of the Ludwig van Beethoven Institute for Piano in Music Educationwho in the presence of Mauricio Kagel’s daughter Pamela Kagel from 04 to February 7, 2025 at the MDW.

The award winners in detail
1. Price: Damian Scholl (Germany) for his work “Love Songs” for piano for eight hands
Two 2nd prices: João Ricardo (Portugal) for his work “What does the Wall Say” for piano 4-hands, Raphael Vilani (Brazil) for his work “Like …”
3. Price: Sean Cedric Schumann (Germany) for his work “Six Shortpieces”
Jury recommendation: Sang Hyun Hong (South Korea) for his work “Six Memories”

The competition
The aim of this very special competition is to promote the creation and spread of new piano works for children or adolescents. Of the more than 200 over 50 countries worldwide, 14 were nominated for the final, which were performed on three afternoons by students from the institute.

After the presentations, the works were made by the prominently occupied jury, consisting of Annesley Black, Michael Jarrell, Isabel Mundry, Miroslav Srnka und Marco Stroppa publicly discussed. The audience was able to follow directly which aesthetic and compositional assessment criteria were brought into the meeting when it comes to answering the question of which tonal language can be described as contemporary and artistically uncompromising without exceeding an adequate pianistic level of difficulty.

A special feature of this competition is that the decision -making process always takes place publicly and that all submissions take place anonymously.

As with the four previous competitions, the presentations of the final pieces and the jury discussions were streamed live again this time.

The prices
1. Price Euro 6,500, 2nd price Euro 4,500, 3rd price EUR 3,500
The award -winning pieces are published in cooperation with Universal Edition and the Ludwig van Beethoven Institute for Piano Poetry In Music Pedagogy, an audio recording with the prized works and selected pieces of the recommendation list will produce and publish digitally.
