Since October 2023, numerous meetings in Austria, which are committed to human rights and against international law violations in Palestine, have been officially prohibited or dissolved by the police. Against this practice, the renowned Dr. Inspring Astrid Wagner has now filed a lawsuit at the Constitutional Court. The constitutional and fundamental rights expert Dr. Thomas Prader, former state spokesman for the Vienna Greens, supports the initiative.
The focus of the criticism is a decree of the Ministry of Justice, which in fact prohibited certain statements such as the demand for a free Palestine “From the River to the Sea” or the term “Intifada”. In practice, these requirements led to far -reaching restrictions on freedom of assembly. “The selective restriction of freedom of assembly contradicts fundamental constitutional principles”
emphasizes Thomas Prader. “The peaceful entry for human rights and the equal treatment of all people in Palestine or on Derswo must remain possible in a rule of law like Austria
.”
Astrid Wagner also underlines the importance of the lawsuit: “The peaceful entry for human rights and the equal treatment of all people in Palestine or on Derswo must remain possible in a rule of law like Austria
“. Both right-wing experts see the action against Palestine solidarity a worrying sign of the hollowing out of democratic basic principles such as freedom of expression and the rule of law.
