AK Kids trade fair “Professions to tackle” AK Lower Austria is getting children excited about the world of work for the first time in Wr. Neustadt
St. Pölten (OTS) – Numerous students from the Wr district had fun trying it out on Thursday and Friday. Neustadt and surroundings. The career orientation fair “AK-Kids: Careers to tackle” took place for the first time this year in Wr. Neustadt (casemates). In January, 2,400 students were able to receive information at the two-day BO fair in Vösendorf. “We cannot afford to forego the talents and strengths of our children and we will not leave them alone when it comes to these important future issues. “We therefore begin early on to introduce children and young people to the variety of training and further education opportunities at school,” said AK Lower Austria President and ÖGB Lower Austria Chairman Markus Wieser.
The Lower Austrian Chamber of Labor invited children from elementary school age to take part, try things out and find out more. Numerous companies, schools and institutions in the region provided a child-friendly overview of career opportunities. For two days, the children were able to get a taste of the professional world and test their craft skills with materials, equipment and machines. “At the fair, children and young people have direct contact with companies in the region and get to know the topic of work in a playful way. It is important that the wide range of training opportunities available is made known. And when personal strengths and the right profession are brought together, it is a win-win situation for everyone involved,” says AK Lower Austria President and ÖGB Lower Austria Chairman Markus Wieser.
Early career orientation & talent development
“A job in which you can use your own skills and strengths is something you do well and are successful at. It is important to discover your own skills and talents. The sooner young people know this, the sooner they will know whether there is a suitable school or apprenticeship for them in the variety of training courses available,” emphasizes Wolfgang Ecker, President of the Lower Austrian Chamber of Commerce and adds: “Therefore, as the Lower Austrian Chamber of Commerce, we take numerous measures for career orientation, starting with elementary school and continuing through adolescence to parents and teachers.” The Lower Austrian Talent Check and regional career information fairs are examples of this as well as together with Projects and initiatives developed in cooperation with the AK NÖ. “Career orientation is not only an important concern for the social partners, but also a key key for young people and the economy. For young people, because a suitable career is the best start to a successful and contented life. In companies, people who have a job that is fun are also better and more motivated employees,” explains Ecker.
Good training pays off
For AK Lower Austria Deputy Director Christian Farthofer Training is an investment in the future and comprehensive career orientation should begin as early as possible. It is particularly important to him that girls consider technical training and boys consider social careers. Because “the children should be able to see the wide variety of careers and try out what talents they have.”
The deputy regional manager of the AMS Lower Austria also knows how important it is to lay the foundation for training in childhood Carmen Frena: „The current rise in youth unemployment shows once again that starting a career is very difficult for young people without training. On average in 2023, around 46 percent of young job seekers could not have more than a compulsory school leaving certificate. Last year there were around 1,850 young people aged up to 25 years. Against this background, the choice of training and career is a particularly important decision in the lives of young people. At the “Professions to Attack” trade fair, children and young people have the opportunity to get to know companies from the region and also receive an overview of the diverse range of companies Career opportunities.”
Successful joint educational projects between the social partners
So many careers, but which one is right for me? Many children and their parents face this challenge every year. The Chamber of Labor and the Chamber of Commerce of Lower Austria have jointly addressed this issue and developed and implemented three successful projects – an app, a hidden object picture and a play. The BoToGo App (botogo.at) helps in three steps to make the right decision when it comes to training or choosing a career. The career orientation app supports children and young adults in finding their dream job. With the Hidden object Elementary school children can discover ten selected career profiles online. In this way, the children are introduced to the topic of work and career in an age-appropriate manner. The Play “Wakany – the fairy professions” takes elementary school children into a professional fairytale world and is intended to awaken children’s interest in the professional world, especially in apprenticeships.
