Post system logistics: Supporting mentally ill people in returning to work

Since the beginning of the year, Post Systemlogistik, a subsidiary of Austrian Post AG specializing in fulfillment services, and REiNTEGRA, a non-profit organization for people with mental illness, have been working together in Vienna-Strebersdorf. Fulfillment services encompass the entire process of order processing, especially in the area of e-commerce. On average, up to fifteen REiNTEGRA participants support each day with the picking of goods and set construction, i.e. the assembly of individual items for e-commerce orders, as well as with packaging activities and preparation for shipping. During today’s on-site inspection, Peter Hacker, Vienna City Councilor for Social Affairs, Health and Sport, Walter Oblin, designated General Director and Board Member for Letters & Finance, Österreichische Post AG, and Manfred Skoff, Managing Director of REiNTEGRA non-profit GmbH, were convinced of the importance of this successful cooperation.

“Inclusion must not just be a oft-quoted term, but must also be brought to life. This means that people are enabled to participate in social life and, in particular, also includes professional participation and an organized daily structure. People want to contribute something and you have to enable them to do so. This also requires reliable partners in business life. If everyone helps together, then something very good can happen. Today I was able to see for myself what a successful project like this looks like in practice,” said City Councilor Peter Hacker.

“As Austrian Post, we act sustainably in all dimensions, including an appreciative, diverse working environment and assuming social responsibility. Through the cooperation with REiNTEGRA we can support people with mental illnesses to get back into work. I am pleased that this cooperation, from which both sides benefit, is working so well,” explains Walter Oblin, designated general director and board member for mail and finance at Österreichische Post AG.

“A meaningful daily structure is like a lighthouse in the darkness – it offers orientation, hope and gives you the strength to face each day with confidence. For mentally ill people it is of great importance to be able to take responsibility. It is sometimes life-sustaining because the… People experience that they are needed. They experience the deep feeling of self-efficacy and belonging that is so essential for trust and stabilization and recovery,” says Manfred Skoff, Managing Director of REiNTEGRA non-profit GmbH, and adds: “Providing courage is our most beautiful thing Task!”

“We are demonstrating here how central the success factor of people is in logistics. Regardless of whether an innovative AutoStore system or other technical aids are used, the employees are always crucial. Through the cooperation with REiNTEGRA, we not only receive additional support, but we can also set up the Post System Logistics teams to be even more diverse,” says Peter Umundum, Board Director for Parcel & Logistics, Österreichische Post AG.

The first points of contact between Post and REiNTEGRA emerged after the COVID-19 pandemic. As part of “Everything gurgles!”, Post Systemlogistik was entrusted with the safe and rapid transport of the PCR tests and samples. The resulting contacts between the post office and the city led to the desire for long-term cooperation on this level as well.

The participants employed by REiNTEGRA have been working at Post Systemlogistik since January 2024. Under the guidance of trained rehabilitation trainers, they can carry out their activities without stress and pressure and thus experience a meaningful day and thus find a possible return to working life. Around 50,000 packages are picked and shipped every month.
