Post delivery will take place completely with e-vehicles by the end of the year

Vienna (OTS) –

The Austrian Post is about to have a historical milestone: by the end of the year, the entire delivery in Vienna will only be on foot, by bike or electric vehicle and thus CO₂-free. Around 700 electric vehicles are already in use, significantly more than half of the vehicles used in Vienna. With the complete switch to e-mobility, Vienna becomes the first European metropolis in which packages, letters, brochures, newspapers and magazines are delivered completely CO2-free on the last mile. Post invests around 32 million euros in charging infrastructure and electric vehicles.

Walter Oblin, General Director, Austrian Post AG:Even in challenging times, we stick to our course and consistently pursue our sustainability strategy. With the nationwide switch to e-mobility in Vienna, our federal capital becomes the first European metropolis of this size, in which all post programs are only delivered on foot, by bike or electrically. This investment underlines our commitment and is an important milestone on the way to a climate -friendly future.

Peter Umundum, Board of Directors for Package & Logistics, Austrian Post AG:With around 700 electric vehicles, more than half of our fleet in Vienna has already switched to e-mobility. We install the last charging stations by the end of the year and take another 400 electric vehicles into operation in Vienna. By the end of the year, more than two million inhabitants will be served on the last mile CO2-free-this is unique in Europe!

Post delivery in Vienna

The delivery of letters, brochures, newspapers and magazines takes place over a total of 17 delivery bases in the Vienna city area, plus three package delivery bases within Vienna and a location in the north of Hagenbrunn. In the final expansion, over 1,500 deliverers will travel CO2-free every day, on foot, with e-bikes, e-mopeds or e-transporters.

E-drive and photovoltaics: Post vehicles as a rolling power plant

The Post E-Fleet is not only the country’s largest by far, it also grows rapidly. Since 2022, only electric vehicles have been purchased in the delivery, and around 1,000 new electric vehicles are added every year. The Austria-wide e-fleet currently consists of over 5,000 electric vehicles. By 2030, Swiss Post will switch its entire delivery fleet of 10,000 vehicles to electric drive and deliver all programs completely CO2-free.

Post already produces the required electricity itself: In Austria, photovoltaic systems with a total output of over 18 MWP were installed at 34 locations, which means that the balance sheet share of electricity from renewable energy sources is more than 20 percent. Post is one of the largest domestic plant operators – excluding energy suppliers – and could already refuel 3,000 e -vehicles with solar energy purely mathematically today. The future vision: an e-fleet that can store the energy and feed back into the network.
