On the national holiday, Minoritenplatz in Vienna’s first district became the venue for “Police Day”. Tens of thousands of visitors took the opportunity to find out first-hand about the day-to-day work of the police and the extensive field of activity of the profession. The highlight of the day was the show program – starting with the Lower Austria Police Music and the operational unit and the police service dog department through to the Vienna operational unit WEGA and the Cobra operational squad.
Participation challenges
The Federal Police Directorate, the EKO Cobra, the Federal Criminal Police Office and the Office for the Protection of the Constitution challenged the visitors in participatory challenges: shooting at targets with pepper spray, securing their own fingerprints, climbing a rope on a special EKO Cobra vehicle or recognizing fake news you could show whether you are suitable for the police profession. If you were successful, you received a patch designed for “National Police Day”. Seven winners will also experience an exclusive day with the police in the coming weeks and gain an even deeper impression of the police profession.
Zwtl.: Interior Minister thanks for the appreciation of police work
“The Austrian police ensure and protect peaceful and democratic coexistence in our country,” said Interior Minister Gerhard Karner. “The presentation of the diversity of the police profession and the operational competence associated with it, but also the professional possibilities and opportunities, especially for young people, were an important contribution to the national day celebrations today.” The Interior Minister added: “I would like to thank all visitors to the Information stands and demonstrations at Minoritenplatz and Rathausplatz, whose interest also expressed their appreciation for the often difficult work of the police.”
The General Director of Public Security, Franz Ruf, was also on site and was enthusiastic about the commitment of the around 300 officers deployed: “We as the Austrian Federal Police have a special responsibility towards the people. It makes me proud to see how my colleagues take advantage of the opportunity and show our diverse work at its best. Events like these are essential to strengthening the population’s understanding and trust in our work – and at the same time attracting new colleagues.”
Occasionally: Police also present at the security festival
The police were also represented at the security festival at Vienna’s Rathausplatz. Together with other aid and emergency organizations, the Vienna State Police Department presented numerous pieces of equipment and vehicles and organized demonstrations, including for the WEGA operational unit.

Police officers are constantly being sought throughout Austria. The basic training lasts 24 months and offers a solid mix of practical teaching content and teaching social skills. It includes a one-year basic training, a three-month professional internship, a five-month theoretical in-depth study with a final service examination and a further four-month professional internship.
