At the annual graduation ceremony at the Nuremberg location last Friday, the Paracelsus Medical Private University (PMU) recorded the 1000th completion of its human medicine degree. Next Friday, September 20th, the decree will be awarded for “Dr.in med.” univ.” or “Dr. med. univ.” for the graduates in Salzburg. Since its launch in autumn 2003 in Salzburg, a total of 1,076 people have successfully completed their human medicine studies at the PMU at both locations. The new cohort started at the beginning of September, and applications for the 2025/2026 academic year are possible from October 7th.
Last Friday, September 13th, in the Nuremberg town hall in the presence of PMU Rector Univ.-Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Sperl: “Habemus doctors!”. By then, 975 students had successfully completed the demanding course of study at the Paracelsus Medical Private University, 746 of them at the headquarters in Salzburg and 229 at the Nuremberg location founded in 2014. Number 25 in the alphabetical order of current Nuremberg graduates – Amelie Osswald (25) from Laubendorf/Langenzenn (Bavaria) – was also the PMU’s 1,000th human medicine graduate overall.
“The thousandth completion of our human medicine degree marks a happy milestone in the success story of the PMU. Our graduates enjoy a very good reputation across the board and are active nationally and internationally in the healthcare system and in research, increasingly in leadership positions,” says Rector Wolfgang Sperl. The five-year course is characterized by research-based teaching, a high level of practical relevance, teaching in small groups and individual support – after a three-stage selection process, a maximum of 80 study places are awarded annually in Salzburg and 55 at the Nuremberg location. The course is demanding and tightly scheduled; after the third year, completion of the USMLE (United States Medical Licensing Examination) Step 1 is mandatory as an external benchmark exam, and an international research trimester follows in the fourth year. The rector of the PMU, which was founded in 2002, emphasizes: “The PMU has always had ‘quality rather than quantity’. We want to have the best students with us and train them to become doctors who are characterized by a high level of competence and social responsibility and who are able to provide special services in care, research and teaching.”
Sponsion in Salzburg on September 20th
The annual award ceremony for “Dr.in med. univ.” or “Dr. med. univ.” traditionally takes place at the Nuremberg PMU location a week before that of the Alma Mater in Salzburg. On Friday, September 20, 2024, another 60 graduates of the Salzburg class of 2019 will receive their decrees at the graduation ceremony in Hangar-7. The PMU now has a total of 1,076 graduates in human medicine.
New vintage started at the beginning of September
The PMU students started the new academic year 2024/2025 on September 2nd – and thus significantly earlier than the medical students at public universities. This means that there are currently 618 human medicine students in five years in training at the PMU – 368 of them in Salzburg and 250 in Nuremberg. The application phase for the 2025/2026 academic year begins on October 7, 2024.
