- Export and e-commerce as growth drivers
- OOH solutions are increasingly in demand
DPD – Austria’s leading private parcel service* – looks back on a successful year in 2024. In total, more than 62.3 million parcels were moved for corporate and private customers, which corresponds to an impressive increase of one million parcels compared to 2023. Growth drivers were primarily exports and private customer business.
Significant increase in export business
“We were able to increase our export business by more than 12%, which underlines the increasing importance of global supply chains and the strong demand for international deliveries. The top export market was again Germany, with France being number two in 2024 with significant growth compared to 2023. The third strongest export country was Italy. The main reason for this is our successful cooperation with the second-hand online retailer Vinted, which has a strong presence in these markets,” explains DPD Managing Director Rainer Schwarz about the development.
“Our customers trust in our export expertise because, as part of the international DPD network, we offer uniform service standards worldwide and delivery to 50 countries. This makes us the strongest parcel logistics provider in Austria* when it comes to exports,” continues Schwarz.
E-commerce as a growth driver – already 50% of all packages for private customers
DPD now delivers almost every second parcel to a private recipient. In 2024, more than 31 million packages were moved in this area. Compared to 2023, this is an increase of around 11%.
“People’s consumer behavior has clearly and sustainably changed towards online shopping. With our innovative solutions, such as the parcel management app myDPD, we are focusing on this trend: receive parcels whenever and however you want. 760,000 Austrians already use it.
In contrast, due to the sluggish economic situation in Austria and throughout Europe, there is currently little growth impetus in the B2B segment. We have nevertheless successfully secured our market leadership and hold around 34% market share in this area*,” says Rainer Schwarz.
Significantly increasing demand for OOH solutions
With a total of more than 3,000 pickup locations (parcel shops and stations), DPD offers the largest shipping, collection and returns network for parcels in Austria.
In 2024, over 7 million parcels were moved via the DPD Pickup network. That is around 62% more than the year before.
“The social trend “Out of Home” (OOH), which has long since arrived in other European countries, has now become increasingly important in parcel logistics in Austria and represents an important development that DPD recognized 10 years ago . As a pioneer among private parcel service providers, we laid the foundation for our current, close-knit pickup network and opened the first parcel shops in Vienna,” explains Rainer Schwarz.
Given the continued increase in online orders from consumers, parcel shops and stations offer a flexible and convenient way to receive parcels, but also to send or return them. Recipients are no longer bound to specific delivery times and can pick up their shipments when and where it suits them best. You can manage your packages yourself and also do something good for the environment. The precise delivery also saves numerous empty kilometers and thus CO2.
Via DPD in Austria
DPD Austria (DPD Direct Parcel Distribution Austria GmbH) is Austria’s leading private parcel service* and has been providing first-class parcel logistics solutions for business and private customers for 37 years. Founded in 1988 as the first private parcel service (then APS-Austria Parcel System), DPD relies on the logistics infrastructure of its shareholders – Austria’s leading shipping companies Gebrüder Weiss, Lagermax and Schachinger. Around 2,500 logistics experts work in the DPD network across Austria, who, together with a transport fleet of 1,600 vehicles, moved around 62.3 million parcels in 2024. Another strong pillar of this network are the 3,000 pickup locations (parcel shops and stations) across Austria where parcels can be sent, picked up and returned. Internationally, as part of French Geopost, DPD has access to the strongest road network in Europe and access to around 110,000 pickup locations in 50 countries.
