Trifluoracetat (TFA)a small but highly persistent and very mobile chemical (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substance, or PFAS for short), was found in one EU-wide drinking water sample test even detected in mineral water. These results show that TFA not only contaminates rivers, lakes and tap water, but also affects deep aquifers that should actually (in accordance with the European Mineral Water Directive) provide water of “original purity”. These results are a Wake-up call for overdue regulatory action to protect our waters!
Against this background, PAN Europe and GLOBAL 2000 are informing about two in the press conference Draft regulations of the European Commissionwith which the renewed for the first time Permit of two of the 34 approved PFAS pesticide active ingredients that can release TFA as a persistent degradation product, be refused should. This is justified, among other things, by the reproductively harmful properties of the eternal chemical TFA. This proposal will be published on December 4th and 5th in the Standing Committee on Plants, Animals, Food and Feed (SCoPAFF for short) discussed with the Member States.
In addition, as announced in the summer, we will complete the Results the investigation of 19 European mineral water brands in 7 countries – including the five largest Austrian bottlers – which are contaminated with TFA to very different extents (from undetectable to over 3,000 nanograms per liter).
