Clear positioning of all parties on the EU renaturation law required
Vienna (OTS) – On the day of the European climate strike, the recently launched petition for the renaturation law reached the significant mark of over 19,000 supporters. This high level of participation now enables the initiator Wolfgang Suske to submit the petition to parliament for a statement. The aim of the petition is to get the federal states to approve the law or at least to achieve a non-uniform statement from the states so that Environment Minister Gewessler can approve the law in the European Council on June 17th.
„We started this petition three and a half weeks ago. The response from the population in town and country is enormoussays Wolfgang Suske. The support committee includes numerous managers from agriculture and forestry, representatives of fishermen, biologists, doctors, scientists and artists such as Josef Hader, Lukas Miko, Pia Hierzegger and Roland Düringer.
Due to the enormous turnout, the petition is now being presented to Parliament for an opinion as a first step. Suske is calling for a statement from all parliamentary groups on the EU renaturation law and would like to receive clarification as to why the law was supported by MP Schieder at the EU level within the SPÖ, but not all efforts are being made at the state level to overcome the blockade of the state governors To clear the way for the law. “We want to continue to increase the pressure on the state governors. And even if there is no decision in the EU Council on June 17th, it will not be over. The issue will then drag on into the fall and will also influence the National Council election. We will not stop responding publicly to the many fake news stories being spread about the law.” Suske refers to the recurring claim that the law endangers food security and leads to expropriation. “Numerous farmers are represented both in the support committee and among the supporters. Their message is: Sustainable food production requires healthy nature.“
The planned law contains key measures for climate protection. “There is one issue that is very important to agriculture, and that is the lack of water.The Renaturation Act promotes the rewetting of suitable areas on a voluntary basis and thus an improvement in local water balances and the microclimate.
