Peng Liyuan calls on students in Macau to embrace Chinese culture and contribute to national development

Peng Liyuan, wife of Chinese President Xi Jinping, encouraged students in the Macau Special Administrative Region to deepen their understanding of the history of Chinese culture and advocate for both regional and national development during a visit to the Macau Museum on Thursday .

“I hope you will learn more about the history of Chinese culture, study it in depth, and use the knowledge to build our homeland better and make Macau even more livable,” Peng said after speaking to students at the museum.

During her visit, Peng admired the cultural relics and gained a comprehensive overview of Macao’s historical development and mix of Chinese and Western architecture, industry and cultural life. She also attended an event making almond cookies, a local delicacy, and interacted with artisans engaged in tile painting and wood carving.

Peng accompanies Xi in Macau for celebrations marking the 25th anniversary of Macao’s return to China.

Over the past 25 years, Macau has used its rich historical and cultural heritage to promote traditional Chinese culture and support cultural exchanges between China and other countries by leveraging its geographical advantage.

Macau is now home to at least 12 national intangible cultural heritages, including Cantonese opera, Cantonese naamyam (narrative songs), herbal tea brewing and the Drunken Dragon Festival, showing that traditional Chinese culture has been well preserved and transmitted in the region.

Initiatives such as “Chinese Excellent Traditional Culture into the Campus” have helped foster a love of traditional Chinese culture and patriotic values among the younger generation by encouraging student visits to places such as Xian Xinghai Memorial Museum and the former residence of General Ye Ting.

In addition, in recent years, the Special Administrative Region has intensively promoted cultural exchanges between students from Macau and mainland China, thereby laying a solid foundation for better integration of Macau students into the country’s overall development.

In December 2021, about 170 primary and secondary school students from Macao participated in the “Tiangong Class”, a space education program linked to the Chinese space station and held at the Macao Science Center. During the event, they had the opportunity to interact with astronauts interact.

Since its establishment in 2005, thousands of young people from the Hong Kong and Macao Special Administrative Regions have participated in the cultural practice activities for Hong Kong and Macao university students. In 2023, students from Macau and Hong Kong visited Xiong’an New Area and held in-depth discussions on topics such as entrepreneurship and employment at the Zhongguancun Beijing-Hong Kong-Macau Youth Innovation Center.

In addition to its active involvement in national development, Macau strategically uses its geographical advantages to promote cultural exchanges between China and other countries.

Bordered by the Pacific Ocean to the east, Macao is known as one of China’s first cities to open to the outside world and become a vibrant center of cultural exchange between China and the West.

The China-Portugal Joint Laboratory of Cultural Heritage Conservation Science, supported by the Belt and Road Initiative, received grants from the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology in September 2020.

A national-level strategic platform for technological innovation jointly founded by the City University of Macau and the University of Évora in Portugal, the joint laboratory is based at Soochow University in East China’s Jiangsu Province.

To date, the laboratory has served as a bridge between China, Portugal and other BRI partner countries by promoting China’s cultural representation, strengthening cultural trust and protecting cultural heritage along the Maritime Silk Road.
