Parliamentary week from October 14th to 18th, 2024

The Presidential Conference will meet next week to prepare for the constituent meeting of the newly elected National Council on October 24th. EU Parliament President Roberta Metsola is received in the House by National Council President Wolfgang Sobotka and receives the Grand Decoration of Honor in Gold for services to the Republic of Austria. The EU Main Committee has planned a meeting in advance of the European Council meeting.

The 149th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) will take place in Geneva from October 14th to 17th. The focus will be on leveraging science, technology and innovation for a more peaceful and sustainable future. On the Austrian side, MPs Andreas Minnich (ÖVP), Christoph Matznetter (SPÖ), Hubert Fuchs (FPÖ) and Federal Councilor Maria Huber (Greens) are taking part in the meeting.

2 p.m.: EU Parliament President Roberta Metsola comes to Vienna and is received in Parliament by National Council President Wolfgang Sobotka. The reason for the visit: Metsola receives the Grand Decoration of Honor in Gold for services to the Republic of Austria. (Reception lounge, Parliament)

6:00 p.m.: National Council President Wolfgang Sobotka and the Association of German Old Austrian Country Teams in Austria (VLÖ) invite you to the 70th anniversary of the interest group in the House. After Sobotka’s opening words and a video greeting from Upper Austrian Governor Thomas Stelzer, VLÖ President Norbert Kapeller and historian Phillip Strobl will give celebratory speeches. During a round of discussions, representatives of the parties represented in the National Council exchange ideas. Words of thanks come from the Federal Chairman of the Sudeten German Country Team in Austria Rüdiger Stix, the General Secretary of the Danube Swabian Association in Austria Gerhard Schiestl and the Federal Chairman of the Federal Association of Transylvanian Saxons in Austria Manfred Schuller. 3:15 p.m.: The parliament is the venue for the first conference of the National Fund of the Republic of Austria for Victims of National Socialism. Under the title “Remembrance and Responsibility,” the conference looks at the coming to terms with National Socialism in Austria. It will also be discussed how commemoration in Austria can be organized in the future and what topics need to be addressed. The commemorative year of 2025 is approaching: 80 years of the end of the war and the Second Republic. National Council President Wolfgang Sobotka, also in his capacity as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the National Fund of the Republic of Austria for Victims of National Socialism and the Fund for the Repair of Jewish Cemeteries in Austria, will open the conference.

The program includes discussions with internationally active memorial service providers as well as keynote speeches by philologist and contemporary witness Katja Sturm-Schnabl, historian Brigitte Bailer and political scientist Elke Rajal. This will be followed by a panel discussion with Oskar Deutsch, President of the Jewish Community of Vienna, Barbara Glück, Director of the Mauthausen Concentration Camp Memorial, Susanne Janistyn-Novák, Deputy Director of Parliament, Andreas Kranebitter, Managing Scientific Director of the Documentation Archive of the Austrian Resistance and Moritz Wein from the Federal Ministry of Education , science and research. 6:00 p.m.: The exhibition “Torn from Life. Fates of Austrian Jews after the Anschluss in 1938” also opens in Parliament on Tuesday. The international memorial Yad Vashem conceived the show, which will be on view until November 10th. Yad Vashem Chairman Dani Dayan will also be present at the opening of the exhibition and give welcoming remarks. Opening words come from National Council President Sobotka. National Council President Wolfgang Sobotka travels to Prague for an official visit. There he will meet, among others, with the Chairwoman of the House of Representatives of the Czech Republic Markéta Pekarová Adamová for discussions. (Czech Republic, Prague)
