The groundbreaking for the park of biodiversity in the Danube city was last summer, then the forest of the young Viennese was also planted diligently, now the park is already taking concrete forms.
“With this district park, Vienna gets a spacious new park that not only plays an important role as a relaxation room, but also consciously and centrally prescribed the topic of perception and development of urban biodiversity,” emphasizes Klimastadtkrat Jürgen Czernohorszky. “In addition to its importance for the residents and the district, the park also has a lighthouse function for all of Vienna – in the sense of biodiversity, quality of life and the circular economy!”
“Especially in the Danube city, you know exactly what importance natural recreation areas have. This future -oriented parking project is now coming to the Lobau and the many other green spaces with us, which brings nature directly to the front door, ”emphasizes the district head of the Donaustadt, Ernst Nevrivy.
Toboggan hill, flower meadows and toothed decorations
The new park east of the Hirschstetten bathing pond is created on an area of 11 hectares and is therefore significantly larger than, for example, Helmut Zilk Park with 70,000 m2 or about as large as the Viennese city park.
The modeling of the site is progressing quickly: the ground of the nearby large construction sites in the area of the city expansion area around Berresgasse is practically reused. “This maintains the circulation and the soil finds a new important function in improving biodiversity – in the sense of a city of short transport routes,” emphasizes Jürgen Czernohorszky.
A wide variety of areas are designed: there will be walks, resting and relaxation zones, meadows, a tobogganing hill and playing options. and flower -rich lean meadows are supported.
“What you know is protected. With the “Park of Biodiversity” we show that species protection and urbanity go hand in hand. We protect in Vienna and receive the biological diversity in the city and at the same time create even more green and relaxation rooms for the Viennese. We use this to set the next step-by-wing, sustainable and grandchildren-friendly future, “says Josef Taucher, SPÖ club chairman.
