At the age of 13 or 14 years old, one of the early records of the British rock group Black Sabbath was heard, an epiphian experience was the same: that was not ABBA or Boney M, that was the right music as it should be. This massive, cumbersome rumbling, dark booming blues skirt was practically antique in the early 1980s – even over ten years old! Music such as heavy, viscous, tough black mud, performed by long -haired, leather jacks who were not willing to collaborate with the enemy (the adult/parents/social authorities).

From the song “War Pigs” you could learn the first lessons about the nature of the war: “The politicians hide / she started the war / but why should they go and fight? / They prefer to leave this role to the poor, Yeah. ”And to the cutting, hammering reef of“ Paranoid ”sang or crossed a young man that he was constantly busy with frowns, was dissatisfied with the badness of the world and had great difficulty in feeling pleasure in anything. With which he spoke a number of teenagers from the soul. (What fit perfectly, was the logo of the British record company Vertigo, borrowed from the OPAR art, which was attached as a label (that is: as a circular label) on one of the two record sides, and that when he was staring at the listener, a feeling of dizziness triggered it long enough when playing the plate.)

That was not Abba or Boney M, that was the real music as it should be.

This extremely reasonable young man, the rock singer John Michael “Ozzy” Osbourne, who was born in 1948 in a bleak working -class district near Birmingham and a loveless childhood characterized by poverty and violence, should still have a surprisingly long and mixed career in front of him. Not only as a co -inventor of the so -called Heavy Metal, a new, influential rock music variant that his band Black Sabbath had devised, but also as “one of the most worthy (should: most insane) representatives of the whole direction” (Dietmar Dath).

At 15 he broke off the school. He once described his late teenage years as follows: “I hated the shitty world. When I heard the stupid shitty words ›if you go to san francisco, be sur to put a flower in your hair‹, I wanted John Phillips (from the folk band The Mamas and the Papas who wrote the song) shear. «

Ozzy did dirty work in the factory and in a slaughterhouse “in which he had to take out cow heads and clean offal” (“taz”). In addition, he operated with limited success as a petty criminal before, enthusiastic about the rousing sound of the Beatles, the decision made the decision to spend the blues and rock permanently and to strive for a career as a singer, which he finally succeeded. A total of eight Black-Sabbath albums were created between 1970 and 1978 with him, Ozzy, a tirelessly physically exhaustive, pouring and crushing stage attraction. He covered many kilometers so much, hiking back and forth, while he gave up his head and hair mane ecstatically back and forth, clapped manically into his hands or springed over the stage boards like a human rubber ball. At the same time, he developed into unofficial European champions in the use of drugs in these years.

“At the beginning, Osbourne almost seemed like angel, like a younger (…) brother of Jim Morrison. In 1979 he was already a driving, flooded wreck “(” Der Spiegel “). In the same year, 1979, it was also time to leave the band Black Sabbath, which he had significantly shaped, because of “artistic differences” with his colleagues, but also because he could no longer meet the requirements of tour and band life due to his increased pleasure over the years.

He had “drafted swimming pools full of schnapps, apart from the cocaine, morphine, sleeping pills, the hustens syrup, LSD and Rohypnol,” the singer said many years later with regard to his temporary extensive drug use. “There is no plausible medical reason that I still exist. Perhaps gene research can explain. “Asked which years of his rock stardase were the most beautiful, he is said to have given the very good answer:” The one I remember. “

In 1980, thanks to the support of Sharon Arden, his manager and later wife who took care of him and encouraged him to continue with the album “Blizzard of Ozz” a memorable career as a solo artist. Musically, he turned away from the Doom-Metal-like Sabbath style and a rather mainstream, pop elements of receiving hard rock, textually it continued on the proven path as before: »People look at me and say: Is the end close, when is the last day on earth? / What does the future of humanity look like? / How should I know? / I was retired, I’m lost. “

The album was a considerable commercial success. This was followed by tours by the United States, in the course of which there were also a hundred thousands of times that has now been rained a hundred thousands of times, which has been dominated by the complete media reporting about the singer to this day: on the stage of a bat, assuming that it was a rubber animal, his head.

Osbourne, which also led a kind of open little war against his former bandmates from Black Sabbath in this phase, then staged itself on record covers and in the media as a bloodstained, the eyes of twisting errer with red-black Dracula cape and grotesque grin on the face, which would be a good part of his recipes in the long term as an artist and the two honorary titles would be “Madman” and “Prince of Darkness” should enter.

His quota play with set pieces and motifs from the horror genre and the occultism (full moon, crucifixes, vampires, dead heads, bats), which he generously integrated into the artwork and his live shows, fortunately repeatedly frightened Christian fundamentalists and other arch-conservative. From then on, not only his rock singer career accompanied by repeated drug excesses and withdrawal stays accompanied his public work, but above all the principle of “The Show must go on”.

He hit a completely new path when he had his everyday life and that of his family filmed by the MTV broadcaster between 2002 and 2005. With the extremely successful reality TV series “Meet the Osbournes”, he dismantled his own myth as a hard dog and bad clown and at the same time created a new one: that of the confused-loving family papas, which was already gently moving, which was once an important rock star. His reality soap-star existence did not harm him, on the contrary: that the metal singer, who had a great preference for the word “fuck”, proved to be a self-abandoning nonsense with a lot of humor, also exhibited his weaknesses in front of the cameras and willingly participated in the production of a caricature of himself, brought him a lot of sympathy.

On July 5 of this year, Ozzy Osbourne had his last public appearance: the final farewell concert by Black Sabbath. As already a few years earlier, the band had come together in the original line -up to complete a final performance in their hometown Birmingham. 45,000 people were in the audience.

Because the singer, who has been suffering from Parkinson’s disease and other health problems for years, could not stand, he was taken to take a seat on a spacious black throne, as he was due. He said goodbye to his fans, also on behalf of his Sabbath colleagues, this evening with the words: »Your support over the years has made it possible for us to lead the lifestyle that we live. I thank you from my heart. ”On Tuesday morning, Ozzy Osbourne died at the age of 76.
