ÖZIV Federal Association sees gaps in barrier-free e-charging stations

Implementation of the directive must be adhered to across the board

Vienna (OTS) Since the summer of 2022, it has been binding that the charging infrastructure for electric vehicles in public spaces must be built barrier-free based on a corresponding guideline (“RVS 03.07.21 – Charging infrastructure for electric vehicles in public spaces”). This applies in particular to information about the minimum space required for the charging stations and the requirement that charging stations must be level and accessible for wheelchairs and that there are no obstacles for walking aids, rollators, etc.

However, we continue to receive complaints about charging stations that do not meet the prescribed standards.“, says Rudolf Kravanja, President of the ÖZIV Federal Association, angrily and adds: “We expect the municipalities to forcefully demand that charging station operators implement the directive – both for existing and newly built stations! The guidelines even contain corresponding sketches of how charging stations (charging stations plus the associated parking spaces) should be set up. “The specifications are clear and unambiguous. Failure to comply with accessibility standards is therefore neither understandable nor acceptable!“, are Rudolf Kravanja.

The guideline also stipulates that the charging stations must be barrier-free. The directive also specifically states that, for example, touch displays, interactive buttons and card reading devices must be installed below a height of 120 cm. For other design features, the Austrian standard B1600 must be adhered to.
