On the day on August 16, 2020, the first “Out of the asphalt” project in the 4th district on Margaretenstrasse cornering OperaGasse made the start of a record offensive clear under the motto, green and cool. The “Raus out of the asphalt” initiative has enriched many measures in the context of the climate pattern city by an essential piece of the puzzle and became a perfect addition to the existing greening and cooling measures. Where tree plantings are not possible or very expensive due to technical installations for water, electricity, district heating or gas, asphalt areas were broken up in consultation with the districts and greened with different plant modules. This used a mix of measures that transformed asphalt deserts into pleasant residence oases, consisting of grass beds, water features, fog steles, bright climate-friendly paving and where possible trees and shrubs. “In view of the increasing temperatures in the city, we have succeeded in reducing sealed space and defusing heat hot spots, especially in the densely installed area. With these measures that we have taken in all 23 districts, we have taken a big step towards climate math.
“Get out of the asphalt” is a real Viennese success story: In just five years we have cleared and greened hundreds of gray asphalt areas – and thus proved that climate shape urban development is possible even in the densely built -in space. This not only increases the quality of stay, but also makes Vienna fit for the challenges of climate change, ”said planning spokeswoman and Neos club director Selma Arapović.
Record offensive for the benefit of the Viennese
Since the start of the “Raus out of the asphalt” initiative, the city of Vienna has implemented a new record of greening projects. So far, 344 “out of the asphalt” projects have been implemented in all 23 districts or are just implemented. 85,500 m2 have been newly greened in the narrowly built -up street space alone, and over 3,300 trees were planted along the classic asphalt deserts in the street and at the same time created almost 2,000 m2 of water features to improve the microclimate in the city.
Extract from the highlights of recent years
For example, large traffic and shopping streets were upgraded. The Thaliastraße was transformed into a climate strut in a length of 2.8 kilometers with 20,000 m2 of deflected area and 240 new trees. Wagramer Straße was transformed into a mega bike highway on 7 kilometers, including street park. Safe and comfortable, the outer Mariahilfer Straße was also converted over a length of 2.5 kilometers with a new two-way bike path, trees and seating for relaxing. In the inner -city area there are several examples of different sizes with a gigantic effect. The Left Wienzeile is densely built on with a lot of asphalt and became a prime example of a maximum greening in a minimal place: the Vienna river wall was greened with wine and tendril plants, new green beds, pillar bubbles and pillar horn beech were green along the houses. The university road was greened with 55 additional trees and has a new top wheel connections to offer with a wide 2-direction cycle path.
One focus was and is the redesign and attracting of the Railway station forensions. The Praterstern started in 2022. With 500 square meters of one of the largest water features in Europe, the former dreary hotspot was created with 8,000 square meters of new green space and 101 trees. The forecourt from the Franz-Josefs-Bahnhof, Julius-Standler-Platz is currently under renovation and is scheduled to be ready at the end of the year. Here are 46 new trees, including a number of large crown XL trees on the square, as well as armchairs, benches, water features and canopies. The new green area is healed from 21 to 2,140 square meters. Next year, the redesign at the main train station will start on two preliminary places with the sealing of 3,500 square meters, 35 new trees, fog steles and new seating. Franz-Jonas-Platz is also attracted fourth in the group. Here the planning is still in the phase of citizens.
Success story “Out of the asphalt” continues
Some of the “out of the asphalt” projects are still implemented, such as the transformation of Vienna’s largest inner-city heat island, the former Naschmarkt car park to a Naschpark with almost 70 trees and almost 7,000 square meters of new green and open space. The first trees have already been planted and climate crossing transformation is progressing in large steps.
At the beginning of the transformation process there is another particularly important project, such as the Favoritenstraße, which will become a climate in a climate mile from the square of cultures to the Reumannplatz. As a highlight, a 50 meter long climbing wall is built in the Gudrunpassage. There are also 100 new trees and 3,000 square meters of green space.
