Women in Islam: Who has the authority to interpret Muslims in Austria?

Islam polarizes Austria like no other religion. The Austrian Islamic theologian Mouhanad Khorchide wants to bring the cosmopolitan side of his religion to the fore with his new dialogue platform “Islam Conference” and is inviting people to a conference on women in Islam next Saturday. The Islamic Religious Community (IGGÖ) criticizes the fact that it is not involved in this dialogue as an official religious representation. It is part of a second event that is also dealing with Islam in Austria this weekend, specifically with the topic of anti-Muslim racism. Who has the authority to interpret the situation of Muslims in Austria? Lisa Ganglbaur lets both sides have their say.

Going unpunished in the future? Debate about abortion in Germany

Should abortions be allowed in Germany in the future or not? A commission of experts has been grappling with this question for a year and presented its results on Monday. Abortions should therefore generally be legalized in the early stages of pregnancy. At the moment they are only exempt from punishment if mandatory advice has been taken beforehand. Representatives of churches and conservative parties consider the current regulation to be balanced and would like to maintain it. The old debate about abortion has flared up again in Germany, reports ORF correspondent Maresi Engelmayer.

Revolutionary thinker: On the 300th birthday of Immanuel Kant

Immanuel Kant is still one of the most important philosophers of modern times, and his “Critique of Pure Reason” is one of the most respected philosophical works in the world. Even 300 years after his birth, Kant’s foundation of morality and law, his writings on eternal peace and his thinking about the limits of human knowledge are still relevant. Kant, who was raised as a strict Protestant and pietist, rejected traditional images of God and showed that neither the existence of God nor the immortality of the soul can be proven theoretically – and yet we have good reasons to hope for them. Karoline Thaler researched what about Kant is still relevant today.

Great art in a small town: Herbert Brandl’s stained glass windows

Innsbruck Bishop Hermann Glettler is convinced that there should be great art even in a small town: The parish church of St. Johann am Walde in East Tyrol, which is currently being renovated, will not only receive an urgently needed renovation of the church tower, external facade and church floor. The medieval church is also getting new stained glass windows designed by the internationally renowned artist Herbert Brandl. Glettler, who is a trained art historian, is keen to ensure that the church and modern art remain in the conversation – and the diocese is certainly willing to pay for that. Lisa Gangl reports.
