On March 3rd at 12.30 p.m. on ORF 2

Vienna (OTS) Sandra Szabo will present the following articles in the ORF religious magazine “Orientation” on Sunday, March 3, 2024, at 12:30 p.m. on ORF 2:

Ukrainian refugees: nuns as start-up help

Almost 84,000 Ukrainian refugees have currently found a temporary home in Austria. The Catholic orders have been involved in helping refugees since the beginning of the war in Ukraine. The Franciscan Sisters in Vienna Simmering, for example, have taken in a large Ukrainian family. Grandparents, parents and three children live in the “Sisters of the Sorrowful Mother” community; they cook and eat together and learn German. Even though the sisters have grown fond of the family, they hope that they will soon be able to live independently in Austria. A report by Zoran Dobrić.

Katharine Drexel: American saint with Vorarlberg roots

She is a saint who is hardly known in this country, although Katharine Drexel’s family comes from Vorarlberg. Katharine was born in Philadelphia in 1858; her father had emigrated to the USA and made a fortune as an investment banker. At the same time, the deeply religious family was involved in helping the poor. After her father’s death, Katharine became an heiress to millions. She founded a religious community and was committed to the indigenous and black population. For this she was threatened with death by racists. Katharine Drexel died on March 3, 1955 and was canonized in 2000. Stefan Krobath went looking for clues in Philadelphia.

Jewish Film Festival: Shalom Oida – living on after terror

This year, the Jewish Film Festival Vienna is putting the political situation in the Middle East at the center of its program. After the terrorist attack on October 7th and the ongoing war in Gaza, it wants to be a place where prejudices are broken down and peace content is shared. Under the motto “Shalom Oida,” more than 30 feature films, documentaries and short films will be shown that illuminate different facets of Jewish life. Karo Thaler provides insights into the program and spoke to the festival directors about life after terror.

Instruments from shipwrecks: premiere at the Scala

They are unique instruments that recently set the tone at the Scala in Milan: the “Orchestra del Mare” performed in the opera house for the first time. The music was played on colorful instruments made from wood from refugee boats. The instrument makers are prisoners in a prison near Milan. Working in the prison workshop not only means a transformation for the wood, but also for some prisoners. A report from Milan by Cornelia Vospernik.
