“Orientation”: Churches support demos against the right

On January 28th at 12.30 p.m. on ORF 2

Vienna (OTS) Sandra Szabo will present the following articles in the ORF religious magazine “Orientation” on Sunday, January 28, 2024, at 12:30 p.m. on ORF 2:

Against the right: churches support demos

After large demonstrations in Germany last weekend with almost a million participants, anti-right rallies are also planned in Austria for Friday evening. The demonstrations in Vienna and Innsbruck are also supported by church organizations, from Caritas to Catholic Youth and Catholic orders. Muslim and Jewish religious representatives also call for participation. The fear of the rise of anti-democratic and racist politics has even brought Catholic bishops into action in Germany. Lisa Ganglbaur and Andreas Pfeifer report from Vienna and Berlin.

Old fears: refugee crisis in Armenia

Last September, more than a hundred thousand Armenians were expelled from Nagorno-Karabakh in Azerbaijan. The Caucasus Republic of Armenia is currently faced with the task of having to supply and integrate them – a Herculean task for the economically poor country. The situation of children is particularly problematic; many are traumatized. The expulsion awakens old fears – as early as 1915, around one and a half million Armenians were victims of mass killings by the Ottomans. Klaus Ther met those affected during a press trip to Armenia and reported on old and new traumas.

Holocaust Remembrance Day: Generation of Forgetting?

History lessons at high schools provide extensive information about the victims of National Socialism. But how much do you learn about the Holocaust at vocational schools? “Generation of Forgetting?” is the name of a study that shows how much graduates of compulsory schools know about National Socialism, the Holocaust and the Second World War. The results are sobering. The number of victims of murdered European Jews, for example, was estimated far too low by one in ten compulsory school graduates, at less than 100,000 people. However, it seems that it is not the migration background but rather the type of school that determines how much young people know about the extermination of the Jews. Sandra Szabo visited Holocaust memorials with young people from Vienna Favoriten.

How does peace work? Religious representatives to the Federal President

Given the war in Israel, is peace between religions possible? All 16 religions recognized in Austria made a public statement on Thursday for peaceful coexistence and cohesion among one another. Together with Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen, they organized an “Hour for Peace” in the Hofburg – and considered how the war in the Middle East can be prevented from affecting the relationships between religious communities. Mariella Kogler was there. The entire “Hour for Peace” will be available from Sunday, January 28th at 1 p.m. under “Orientation” on the ORF TVthek.
