“Schönbrunner Spring Stories – Of Violets, Citrus Trees and Culinary Dreams” (9:05 a.m.)

The ORF/3sat documentary by Anita Lackenberger tells of princes and princesses as well as milkwomen, hunters, fishermen, bakers and sausage makers. He shows the “Schönbrunner kuk cuisine” as an imperial way of life that spread to the common population in the Biedermeier period. People and always have loved eating in Vienna. Much of the imperial recipes have been preserved in the cuisine of the Austrian capital to this day. The film combines culinary and historical “delicacies” on a spring walk through well-known and unknown places between Schönbrunn and the traditional Viennese cafés.

“Andris Nelsons – star conductor without airs and graces” (9.50 a.m.)

Andris Nelsons is currently one of the most sought-after conductors in the world. The press once described him as a “conductor in the fast lane” – and given his breathtaking career, this is certainly true, although he never seemed arrogant. The TV portrait by Carmen Belaschk traces the Latvian’s steep career: his musical beginnings in his native Riga, his training as a trumpeter, his decision to conduct, his first position as chief conductor at the Latvian National Opera at the age of just 24 and his further stations. In 2020, Nelsons made his debut at the Vienna Philharmonic’s New Year’s Concert, joining a list of important predecessors. This year he is conducting “Die Wiener” for the second time at the summer night concert in front of Schönbrunn Palace.

“Karlheinz Hackl – Quite a Theater” (10.40 a.m.)

Karlheinz Hackl would have been 75 years old this May: In a film portrait from 2009 designed by Sharon Nuni, the audience favorite speaks very openly about his life, especially about how he dealt with the illness, which he had overcome for the time being, and which he also knew how to use as an opportunity , before he succumbed to cancer again at the age of 65.

The filmic review presents the artist in all his diversity and winning openness, expressing his “two lives” – as he called them. One, that of the successful, popular actor, and the other, his private life, in which he and his family had to fight against his serious illness. The Viennese talks about this long time with amazing candor – after all, it was more than four years. In the 2008 National Council elections, he amazed all fans when he announced his candidacy. All of this was made up of Karlheinz Hackl, who was able to switch from the very private to the public, from the clown costume to the politician’s suit, with ease and wit.
