Vienna (OTS) “ORF III Theme Monday”: Rail transport and the economy in crisis

“The Bahn-Check” (8:15 p.m.) opens the “ORF III Theme Monday” on May 13th. The train should allow us to travel with a clear conscience, comfortably, safely and on time. But the experiences of many passengers always deviate from the ideals of the operators. In addition to technical difficulties, there are often staff shortages and delays from neighboring countries. Just in time for the holiday season, the new production highlights how reliable travel planning by train is and what delays and disruptions can be expected. The production “Deutsche Bahn – the Insiders” (9:05 p.m.) provides insight into Deutsche Bahn’s strategies and problems – from massive delays to dilapidated infrastructure. “Standstill and rage for rules – is Germany wasting its future?” (9.55 p.m.), this is the question that will be addressed in the second part of the focus evening. Hans Bürger then speaks in “Talk: What’s wrong with Germany?” (10:45 p.m.) about the causes and consequences of the threatening German deindustrialization and its effects on Austria. The guests are Arno Luik (journalist), Wolfgang Hesoun (Siemens Austria), Anja Bröker (Deutsche Bahn) and Klaus Edelsbrunner (WKO, vehicle trade).

Medicine and science on ORF III: “MERYN am Montag” and “Werner Gruber’s Experimental Kitchen”

“Health risk for the perfect mother?” asks “MERYN on Monday” (6.45 p.m.). The traditional image of the ideal mother has solidified over centuries. The realization that one cannot or does not want to meet social expectations is often the starting point for overwhelming feelings of guilt that affect mental health. What does a realistic picture of the role of a mother look like and what support do mothers need to reduce stress, excessive demands and psychological strain? ORF III health expert Siegfried Meryn answers these and other questions together with Martina Leibovici-Mühlberger, psychotherapist and expert on parenting issues.
A new edition of “Werner Gruber’s Experimental Kitchen” on Wednesday, May 15th, under the motto “Intoxicating – hidden secrets of drug physics” (10:30 p.m.) will focus on, among other things, caffeine, saffron, nutmeg and mushrooms. Werner Gruber’s humorous and informative presentation illuminates the complex relationship between drugs and culinary delights and offers a new perspective on the world of flavors and effects.

Das „4GAMECHANGERS Festival 2024“ in ORF III

From Tuesday, May 14th to Thursday, May 16th, this year’s “4GAMECHANGERS Festival” will take place in Vienna’s Marx Hall under the motto “The Power of Cooperation”. For three days, top-class speakers, start-ups and international stars will deal with the most important future topics and innovations of our time. ORF III shows the highlights of the international digital festival, broadcasts live from the Marx Hall for several hours on all three days and asks interesting speakers for interviews: on May 14th from 1:00 p.m. and on May 15th and 16th from 9:00 a.m.

“ORF III Cultural Tuesday” with, among other things, the premiere of “Bad Ischl mondän”

As part of the program focus “Bad Ischl Salzkammergut Capital of Culture 2024”, “Erbe Österreich” is presenting the new production “Bad Ischl mondän” (8:15 p.m.) at the start of “ORF III Cultural Tuesday” on May 14th about a region that was much more than a summer retreat , because politics and far-reaching decisions were made there just as much as in Vienna. So not only the emperor and his court came to Bad Ischl, but also the Viennese nobility. Afterwards, “Erbe Österreich” illuminates further aspects of high society in the past with the documentary “Private Habsburg – Leisure Time of a Ruling Family (9:05 p.m.) and the portrait “Imperial City of Bad Ischl” (9:55 p.m.).

Documentary premieres in “Home Austria”, “Country Life” and “Land of the Mountains”

On Wednesday, May 15th, the new “Heimat Österreich” production “Über die Mühlviertler Alm” (8:15 p.m.) takes place at 500 to 1,000 meters in the northeastern Mühlviertel. There is Liebenau, the highest municipality in Upper Austria, and also the highest forest bog in Austria. ORF III then explores “Life in the Passail Basin” (9:05 p.m.) in a new “Country Life” documentary. Finally, we head to Vorarlberg to a particularly fascinating corner of the diverse country: “Lake Constance” (9:55 p.m.).
“Land of the Mountains” leads for the first time on Thursday, May 16th in “The Valley of the Three Thousand Meters: Ahrntal in South Tyrol” (8:15 p.m.), nestled between the Zillertal Alps in the west and the Rieserferner Mountains in the east. The journey then continues to “South Tyrol – Around the Ortler” (9:05 p.m.).

ORF III congratulates Andrea Handel on her 60th birthday

On the occasion of Andrea Handel’s 60th birthday, “Thursday Night” on May 16th is all about the successful artist. In the new production “Andrea Handel – 60 Years of the Queen of the Cabaret” (9:55 p.m.), ORF III accompanies her for a day in a horse-drawn carriage through Vienna. The round starts in the center of the city, where Merchant remembers her childhood in Vienna and Styria, and goes from the beginnings of her acting training through her first appearances to the most important stages of her life. Afterwards, Birgit Denk welcomes Andrea Handel and the actor Jakob Seeböck to the cult late-night show “DENK mit KULTUR” (11.15 p.m.). This is followed by solo programs “Time Out” (12:05 a.m.) and “The Silence of the Dealers” (12:50 a.m.). “Thursday Night” concludes with “Schlabarett – Mushroom Atom from the Left” (1:50 a.m.), an Army grotesque from 1985 with Alfred Dorfer, Andrea Handel, Roland Düringer and Reinhard Nowak.

ORF-III-“zeit.geschichte”: “The Allies in Austria”

The “zeit.geschichte” evening on Saturday, May 18th is dedicated to the period of occupation after 1945. The documentary series “The Allies in Austria” highlights the different developments in the respective occupation zones. First, the production “Chocolate, Girls, Jazz & Uncle Sam” (8:15 p.m.) shows Salzburg as the western center of the US military administration, where the American way of life has developed particularly well. The Americans presented themselves as carefree victors, as liberators with charm. For many young women, they were symbols of departure into a new, better and worry-free world: freedom, new beginnings and unlimited possibilities. Things were completely different in the Red Army zone in eastern Austria. The film “The Russians are here” (9:10 p.m.) documents attacks, abductions and arbitrariness in a climate of daily threat and fear. For many former British occupying soldiers, their time in Styria and Carinthia was one of the best times of their lives. “Very British” (10:05 p.m.) shows how they took their task as an occupying power in terms of democracy and denazification very seriously. Finally, “Autriche, mon amour” (11 p.m.) sheds light on the initially not easy fate of the French in western Austria.

Classic on Sunday: The “ORF III Whitsun Concert from Melk Abbey”

On Pentecost Sunday, May 19th, “The ORF III Pentecost Concert from Melk Abbey” (8:15 p.m.) – this year’s opening concert of the International Baroque Days at Melk Abbey – is on the program with one of the most important works in church music history: the renowned Concentus Musicus Vienna is hosting his artistic director Stefan Gottfried Johann Sebastian Bach’s B minor Mass for the performance. The solo parts are first-class with Kammersänger Michael Schade, also artistic director of the festival, Trine Lund, Marianne Beate Kielland and Georg Nigl, and the choir is made up of the famous Wilten Boys’ Choir. Before that, Johanna Berki meets Michael Schade for a behind-the-scenes discussion (8 p.m.).
