The “ORF III Theme Monday” on December 11, 2023 from 8:15 p.m. asks “Organic fish – really the solution?” Many people have turned away from mass fish consumption and are opting for organic and organic fish consumption. The “ORF III Cultural Tuesday” on December 12th looks back in the new “Erbe Österreich” documentary “The Vienna City Wall” (8:15 p.m.) at the time the Ringstrasse was built, when the massive fortifications lay like a stone ring around the city center. If you blend old photos and drawings of the city wall into current photos, it becomes clear how completely different the city center must have seemed to the population back then. For “Out of the Frame” (10:45 p.m.), Karl Hohenlohe visits the new permanent exhibition “Vienna. My story”. Director Matti Bunzl and his team lead through the exhibition, from early times to the present, and tell the development of the city using more than 1,700 objects.

Health in ORF III: “MERYN on Monday” and “treffpunkt medizin” on Wednesday

A new edition of “MERYN am Montag” (6.45 p.m.) this time deals with the topic of “Lonely at Christmas time”. For many, Christmas is a festival of joy and conviviality – but by no means for everyone. Many people spend the Christmas holidays alone for various reasons. Some people feel sad or isolated, while others face melancholy or nostalgia. ORF health expert Siegfried Meryn and psychiatrist Michael Musalek answer the audience’s questions and give tips against loneliness.

On Wednesday, December 13th, a new edition of “MERYNS beratungszimmer” will be all about “Sugar, the enemy on my plate” (10.30 p.m.). On the occasion of the annual World Day of the widespread disease diabetes, ORF health expert Siegfried Meryn discusses with Johanna Brix, internist, endocrinologist and diabetologist; Karin Lobner, nutritionist and psychotherapist, as well as Christian Rumerskirch, fitness trainer and specialist in ketogenic nutrition. Then “treffpunkt medizin” turns it into “Health Myths:
Sugar” (11:20 p.m.) the comprehensive fact check.

Documentary highlights on Wednesday and Thursday: “Home Austria”, “Country Life” and “Land of Mountains”

In the main evening on Wednesday, December 13th, ORF III will show the “Heimat Österreich” documentary “When winter moves through the Mürztal” (from 8:15 p.m.), followed by a “Country Life” double: “At the foot of the Glockner” (9:05 p.m.) and “Life on the Tauplitz-Alm” (9:55 p.m.).

On Thursday, December 14th, the new “Land of Mountains” production “Winter in the Shadow of the Großglockner” (8:15 p.m.) is on the program: The myth about Austria’s highest mountain is still unbroken and attracts thousands of mountain enthusiasts every year his spell. Mighty plateaus and deep valleys characterize the mountain groups in Upper Carinthia. However, the film does not primarily focus on the Großglockner as Austria’s landmark, but rather the regions and valleys that stand in the shadow of this mighty mountain. In the big satirical review of the year, “The Round Table” will summarize the highlights, the funniest punchlines and the best moments of the ORF III satire show 2023 on Thursday, December 14th, from 9:55 p.m. Gerald Fleischhacker and his group have this year at the ORF RadioKulturhaus, in The most important topics were discussed in the Wachau Arena Melk and in the Kittenberger adventure gardens. With, among others, Alex Kristan, Andreas Vitásek, Omar Sarsam, Lydia Prenner-Kasper, Angelika Niedetzky, Malarina, Caroline Athanasiadis and many more.

This humorous Best-Of 2023 will be followed one day later, on Friday, December 15th, at 8:15 p.m. by the ORF III Politics “Year in Review: That was 2023”: It was the year of Barbie, the year of AI and the year in which Austria qualified for the European Football Championship. But it was also the year of record heat, international wars, extreme inflation and new political turbulence. The program shows the images and lasting moments of the eventful year 2023. ORF III editor-in-chief Lou Lorenz-Dittlbacher and Reiner Reitsamer welcome, among others, the Vienna community rabbi Schlomo Hofmeister (Israeli religious community) and Imam Ramazan Demir (Islamic religious community) to interviews and discussions Visit schools as peace ambassadors and show ways for peaceful coexistence, especially in times of a newly ignited Middle East conflict. Also guests are: Kurier columnist Michael Pammesberger, President of the Fiscal Council Christoph Badelt, profil editor-in-chief Anna Thalhammer and many more.

“zeit.geschichte” double about Pearl Harbor

On Saturday, December 16th, the “zeit.geschichte” two-part series “Pearl Harbor – The World in Flames” from 8:15 p.m. deals with the attack by Japan on the American Pacific Fleet, which was anchored in the waters of Pearl Harbor in 1941 , as well as its dramatic consequences: the entry of the USA into the Second World War. The “zeit.geschichte” evening ends with the documentary “Christmas at the Front” (9:55 p.m.).

With the “ORF III Advent Concert by the Vienna Symphony Orchestra” (8:15 p.m.) from St. Stephen’s Cathedral, an annual “Stage Experience” highlight is on the program on Sunday, December 17th. This time included: the Slovakian tenor Pavol Breslik and the Egyptian soprano Fatma Said. The Frenchwoman Marie Jacquot will be at the conductor’s podium for the first time. She leads a diverse program with works for soloists, choir, organ and alphorn. In addition to Christmas classics such as “Es ist ein Ros entsprungen” and “O du cheere” you will hear contemplative highlights from the great masters from Bach, Mozart, Tchaikovsky and Puccini to Andrew Lloyd Webber. The singing club of the Society of Music Friends under Johannes Prinz acts as a choir.
