ORF III weekly highlights: Hubert von Goisern on Whit Monday, start of the European elections, “Mysterious Augustinian Church”

Vienna (OTS) Whit Monday: 100 years of the Burgenland Superintendence, film classics, Hubert von Goisern and Austria 3

The ORF III morning on Whit Monday, May 20th, is dedicated to the anniversary of 100 years of superintendence in Burgenland: an introduction to “Evangelicals in Burgenland” (9.50 a.m.) is followed by a “Protestant service on Whit Monday from Oberschützen” (10.00 a.m.). p.m.) and the “Celebration – 100 Years of Superintendence Burgenland” (11 a.m.) moderated by ORF Burgenland presenter Raphaela Pint with high-ranking representatives of the church and the state.
From 12 p.m., five Austrian film classics by cult director Reinhard Schwabenitzky can be seen: “Two Fathers of a Daughter,” “Cheeky Wins” (1:40 p.m.) as well as the “almost perfect trilogy” – “An almost perfect escapade” (3:10 p.m.), “One almost perfect divorce” (4:55 p.m.) and “An almost perfect wedding” (6:40 p.m.).
“Hubert von Goisern meets Lungau Big Band – The Concert” (8.15 p.m.) is then on the program. At the sold-out Orpheum Graz, the exceptional Upper Austrian artist, together with the Lungau Big Band, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary, will once again show how broad his musical spectrum is. Hits like “Brenna tuats guat” can be heard as well as the “Schönberger yodel” or a gospel version of “Sünder”. The documentary “Brenna tuat’s scho lang” then tells the artist’s life story (9:30 p.m.). “Austria 3” (11:05 p.m.) ends the holiday with the legendary open-air concert “Live from Schönbrunn” from 2000. With hits like “Du bist die Blume aus dem Gemeindebau”, “Ruaf mi ned au”, “ “I am from Austria” and many more, the Austropop greats Rainhard Fendrich, Wolfgang Ambros and Georg Danzer thrilled the audience at the time.

Start of the super election year 2024 on ORF III: First TV duels on Tuesday and Wednesday

The super election year 2024 reaches its first climax on June 9th with the election to the European Parliament. The top candidates of the five Austrian parties represented in parliament will compete in their respective ORF III election duels, moderated alternately by Reiner Reitsamer and Theresa Kulovits. The 30-minute confrontations will then be analyzed live in the ORF III studio by Alexandra Nöbauer and Philipp Maiwald (from May 21st twice a week at 4 p.m. on ORF III, repeated at 10:30 p.m.). At the start, Harald Vilimsky (FPÖ) and Helmut Brandstätter (NEOS) meet, and things continue on May 22nd with Reinhold Lopatka (ÖVP) vs. Lena Schilling (The Greens) and Andreas Schieder (SPÖ) vs. Lena Schilling (The Greens ). “ORF III Cultural Tuesday” with, among other things, the premiere of “Mysterious Augustinian Church”

On “ORF III Cultural Tuesday”, May 21st, a new “Erbe Österreich” documentary provides fascinating insights into the “Mysterious Augustinian Church” (8:15 p.m.). For centuries, this important stage was for events in Habsburg and therefore also Austrian history. Prominent personalities such as Maria Theresia, her son Joseph II, her daughter Marie Antoinette, Emperor Franz Joseph and his son Crown Prince Rudolf married here. In the heart crypt, the hearts of 54 Habsburgs rest in silver bowls, who received a special “heart burial”. “Heritage Austria” then shows a long-standing historical connection: “The Habsburgs in Mariazell” (9:05 p.m.). The evening ends with the documentary “The Steyr – Wild River in the Land of Hammers” (9:55 p.m.).

Documentary premieres in “Home Austria”, “Country Life” and “Land of the Mountains”

On Wednesday, May 22nd, there will be a new “Heimat Österreich” production “Around the Fellhorn” (8:15 p.m.). Mountain life in Vorarlberg is still the same as it was generations ago – people have developed their harmony with nature over a long time and do not want to move away from it easily. Afterwards, the new “Landleben” documentary shows the alpine life “Im Bergdorf Hüttschlag” (9:05 p.m.), a national park community in the back of the Großarltal, which only has around 900 inhabitants, followed by the production “Alpine summer in the Hohe Tauern” ( 9:55 p.m.).
On Thursday, May 23rd, “Land der Berge” takes you to the “Almen in der Steiermark” (8:15 p.m.). The new production accompanies Styrian alpine farmers in their everyday lives and portrays the barren living environment above the tree line. Another “Land of Mountains” production tells of “Alpine pastures in Austria – about living with nature” (9:05 p.m.).

“Thursday Night” with, among other things, “20 Years of iPop – The Anniversary Concert”

The country’s most popular religious teacher returns to the stage of “Cabaret in the Tower”. On “Thursday Night” on May 23rd, Stefan Haider will present the funniest things from the classrooms in his “Supplier hour” format (9:55 p.m.). This will be followed by a new edition “On the Red Chair” (10:55 p.m.) with star cabaret artist Alex Kristan, whose performances are sold out months in advance. Bernhard Egger has a very personal conversation with the comedian, which shows the people behind the jack-of-all-trades.

The “zeit.geschichte” evening on Saturday, May 25th, with a total of four editions of the “Acting Legends” series, is all about Austrian film and theater greats. After opening with a portrait of Grande Dame Christiane Hörbiger, who died in 2022 (8:15 p.m.), ORF III presents two new editions that focus on the careers of “Susi Nicoletti” (9:05 p.m.) and “Senta Wengraf” (9:55 p.m.). Finally, the portrait “Acting Legends: Curd Jürgens” (10:45 p.m.) about one of the few global stars that German cinema produced after the Second World War can be seen. Jürgens embodied the charismatic villain alongside Roger Moore in the 1977 James Bond film “The Spy Who Loved Me”.

Classic on Sunday with, among others, Antonio Salieri’s “Kublai Khan”

“Viva Rolando!” (8:15 p.m.) is the motto on Sunday, May 26th in “Experience Stage”. Rolando Villazón, celebrated tenor, artistic director of the International Mozarteum Foundation and artistic director of the Mozart Week, was the focus of this festive charity gala on his 50th birthday in February 2022. With famous companions such as Plácido Domingo, Regula Mühlemann and Charles Castronovo as well as the Camerata Salzburg Under the direction of Giedre Šlekyte, a varied program was offered that included works by Mozart, Verdi, Rossini as well as popular songs from Europe and Mexico. In addition to his leading role in maintaining the artistic legacy of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Rolando Villazón is also an expert on Antonio Salieri, Mozart’s supposed opponent. ORF III then shows a forgotten opera from the MusikTheater an der Wien: the late premiere of the original Italian version of Salieri’s “Kublai Khan”. Directed by Martin G. Berger and conducted by Christophe Rousset, a long-time admirer of Salieri’s music, the production features Christoph Wagner-Trenkwitz in the unusual role of composer Antonio Salieri. The title role is played by Carlo Lepore, accompanied by Lauranne Oliva as Lipi, Marie Lys as Princess Alzima and Alasdair Kent as Kublai Khan’s nephew Timur.
