Vienna (OTS) Four-part “ORF III Theme Monday”

The “ORF III Theme Monday” on January 8th from 8:15 p.m. asks “Soy hormone trap? – Light and shadow of the vegan boom”. Soy is becoming increasingly popular. If you want to eat a low-meat diet, you can hardly avoid the bean and its products. But how healthy is soy really? Medical journalist Bernhard Hain investigated these and other questions in the new production. Related to the topic are the documentaries “Soy, Almond, Seitan & Co – Is Everything Really Better?” (9:05 p.m.), “What is the use of meat substitutes? – The truth behind the veggie boom” (9:55 p.m.) and “Is it possible without meat?” (10:45 p.m.).

“ORF III Cultural Tuesday” including new episodes “Vienna’s Hidden Palaces”

On “ORF III Cultural Tuesday”, January 9th, ORF III will present the first of three new films in the “Heritage Austria” series “Vienna’s Hidden Palaces” at 8:15 p.m. In the new season, Karl Hohenlohe visits palaces again, which everyone knows from passing by, but whose inner workings are not accessible to the public. This issue includes, among other things, the so-called Churhaus – right next to St. Stephen’s Cathedral, as well as the Palais Bartolotti-Partenfeld, known as the oldest house on the corner of Graben and Dorotheergasse. Afterwards, two more “Heritage of Austria” documentaries are on the schedule: “Winter in Vienna back then” (9:05 p.m.) and “How the elevator came to Austria” (9:55 p.m.). The “ORF III Cultural Tuesday” ends with a new edition “What do you value ..?” (10.45 p.m.).

Health in ORF III: “MERYN on Monday” and “treffpunkt medizin” on Wednesday

In a new edition of “MERYN am Montag” everything revolves around the question “Flu or Corona?” (6.50 p.m.). Although the coronavirus and the various influenza viruses belong to different virus strains, the symptoms of an infection are often very similar. A precise classification of the disease is essential in order to take appropriate measures. How does Covid differ from flu and what measures can be taken to alleviate the symptoms? ORF health expert Siegfried Meryn and virologist Christina Nicolodi answer the audience’s questions together.
On Wednesday, January 10th, “treffpunkt medizin” will be doing a fact check on “Health Myths: Grandma’s Home Remedies” (10:30 p.m.). Whether chicken soup for colds, chamomile tea for stomach problems or vinegar wraps for fever – grandmother’s home remedies have a long tradition and have been used for generations to relieve symptoms. But how effective are they really? Another episode takes a look at “virus killers from the medicine cabinet” (11:20 p.m.).

Documentary highlights in “Home Austria”, “Country Life” and “Land of Mountains”

On Wednesday evening, “Heimat Österreich” leads first to “Brixental” (8:15 p.m.). The towns of Brixen im Thale, Kirchberg in Tirol and Westendorf rise at around 800 meters above sea level, embedded in the Kitzbühel Alps. The new production captures the winter life here, when, at least from the outside, “the stable time” has begun. This is followed by a “Country Life” double with “Am Högl” (9:05 p.m.) and “Winterfreuden” (9:55 p.m.).
On Thursday, January 11th, ORF III presents “The Alps in Winter – Between Epiphany and Carnival” (8:15 p.m.). In this documentary, “Land of Mountains” shows the fascinating winter landscape of the South Tyrolean Dolomites and mountain regions of East Tyrol in breathtaking aerial shots. Afterwards, another edition tells about the “Winter Dream in the Nockberge” (9:05 p.m.).

The “Thursday Night” on ORF III

The start of a new season of “Cabaret in the Tower” (9:55 p.m.) is scheduled for Thursday: Walter Kammerhofer, one of the most popular cabaret artists in the country, presents his new successful program “Forever and Ever” in this edition. It will also be humorous Stefan Haider’s “Supplier hour” (10:50 p.m.).

Birthday highlights for Nina Proll and Uli Brée

To mark Nina Proll’s 50th birthday, ORF III is presenting the concert “Suburban Songs by Nina Proll” (11:50 p.m.) on Thursday, January 11th as part of “Soundcheck Austria”. Accompanied by a five-piece band and two dancers, the actress and singer swings and clowns her way with charm through a colorful mix of pop and hits, folk music and cabaret. On Friday, January 12th, the actress can be seen in the 2004 film drama “Heiress with a Heart” (9:05 p.m.).
Also: Uli Brée turns 60! ORF III will show a selection of films from the actor, director and screenwriter’s work on Sunday:
After the comedies “The Honor of the Strizzis” (11.30 a.m.) from 1999 and “Herzensfeinde” (1.05 p.m.) from 2001, all parts of the popular “Brothers” trilogy will be on the program from 2.35 p.m.

Disaster focus in “zeit.geschichte”

On Saturday, January 13th, “zeit.geschichte” will focus on disasters of the past decades in several productions: It begins with the documentary “1954: The largest avalanche disaster in the Alps” (8:15 p.m.) about the tragic events in Blons in the Großes Walsertal – more than 50 people died under the masses of snow. After this tragic event, the technical protection of the Alps began. Then “Galtür: The Chronicle of a Catastrophe” (9:15 p.m.) traces the dramatic days in February 1999 in the Tyrolean mountain village of Galtür. A “century avalanche” with more than 300,000 tons of snow buried parts of the popular winter sports resort. The third production of the evening tells of the “Kaprun Catastrophe” (10:10 p.m.) on November 11th, 2000, when a fire broke out in the tunnel on the glacier cable car to the Kitzsteinhorn and claimed the lives of a total of 155 people.

Classic on Sunday with “Experience Stage”

On the tenth anniversary of Claudio Abbado’s death, ORF III will commemorate the tenth anniversary of Claudio Abbado’s death on Sunday, January 14th with a recording of Gioachino Rossini’s comic opera “The Barber of Seville” (8:15 p.m.) from 1972 under the direction of the star conductor.
