ORF III weekly highlights: 80 years of D-Day, EU election focus – duels, analyzes and the history of the confederation of states

“The Bicycle Check” (8:15 p.m.) opens the “ORF III Theme Monday” on June 3rd: Cycling has been a big trend for years. The range is correspondingly large and the models in the upper price segment have become correspondingly expensive. High-priced e-bikes cost almost as much as inexpensive cars. The new “Heritage of Austria” production “Austria’s Most Beautiful Sagas” (8:15 p.m.) in “ORF III Cultural Tuesday” on June 4th uses the five most famous Austrian legends to search for the historical truths behind them. The film “Vienna – City of Legends” (9:05 p.m.) highlights the special wealth of legends in the federal capital. In “Out of the Frame,” Karl Hohenlohe then takes us to idyllic wine terraces, castles and ruins in the UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage region “Wachau” (9:55 p.m.).

Documentary highlights and new edition “Werner Gruber’s Experimental Kitchen” on Wednesday

“On the Eggeralm” (8:15 p.m.) at around 1,500 m above sea level, surrounded by the Carnic Alps on the border with Italy, ORF III opens the main evening on Wednesday, June 5th with a new “Home Austria” production: the cinematic one The “Country Life” journey continues from Ellmau via Going to Scheffau “Am Wilden Kaiser” (9:05 p.m.) and to “Blumenland Steiermark” (9:55 p.m.).
In a new edition of “Werner Gruber’s Experimental Kitchen,” the physicist then devotes himself to the fascination “Between radioactive moon rocks and cosmic sausages” (10:45 p.m.). He reveals lunar myths and explains why the celestial body turns red during a lunar eclipse, and answers why the American flag fluttered when they landed on the moon and which dish the astronauts enjoyed on their lunar mission. 80 years of D-Day: Numerous documentaries and live broadcast of the commemorations

June 6, 1944, the day on which the landing of the Allied troops in Normandy began, went down in history as D-Day. On the occasion of the 80th anniversary, this central event of the Second World War will be commemorated with an international memorial ceremony on Omaha Beach in Normandy. In addition to French President Emmanuel Macron, US President Joe Biden and King Charles III. Numerous heads of state and government from around the world will take part in the commemorations. ORF III will broadcast the ceremony live and translated at 3:25 p.m. Theresa Kulovits and historian Fritz Dittlbacher host the program.

The documentary is not only a return to the beginnings of the euro in Austria, but also sheds light on the long-term importance of the common currency for Europe and its citizens. This is followed by the production “Legacy of Two Wars – The History of the EU” (9:05 p.m.). Afterwards, ORF III will delve into this eventful history of our continent from 1918 to 2019 in a total of four parts with “Hugo Portisch – The Birth of Europe” from 9:55 p.m.

Sunday on ORF III: EU election, atmospheric church services and “The Round Table”

On Sunday, June 9th, in addition to the election coverage of the EU elections, there are two church services on the program: In the morning, “ORF III LIVE” shows the “Catholic service from Hartberg” in Styria (10 a.m.) and the recording in the evening of the “Evensong as part of the Long Night of the Churches” in Vienna’s St. Michael’s Church (7:15 p.m.). The Evensong is a Christian form of worship in the Anglican tradition – the name combines “evening” with “song” – and combines atmospheric spiritual choral and instrumental music, congregational singing and the reading of Bible texts. After the “Round of Editors in Chief” (8.30 p.m.) with Lou Lorenz-Dittlbacher on the occasion of the EU elections, the day ends on a humorous note with a new edition of the “Table Round” (9.20 p.m.). Gerald Fleischhacker welcomes Thomas Maurer, Malarina, Angelika Niedetzky and Berni Wagner to the satirical monthly review.
