ORF-GD-Weißmann: Successful start of “ORF for everyone”

ORF 1 achieved its best January rating since 2015; Top values for the ORF group, record usage and great satisfaction with ORF video streams

Vienna (OTS) January 2024 saw the launch of a large number of ORF innovations and program highlights, which were used by people in Austria to a record-breaking extent. Whether it’s the countless positive feedback on the launch of the streaming platform ORF ON or the comprehensive expansion of content in the TVthek app, whether the mass of reactions to the new digital ORF children’s offer ORF KIDS or numerous viewership records in the linear ORF TV channels – January impressively showed that “ORF for everyone” delivers programming for everyone, which is also consumed by millions of people in Austria. Particularly pleasing: ORF 1, which has been massively converted into a channel with domestic content since ORF management Weißmann began, has substantially reduced the proportion of purchased productions and achieved a market share of 14.9 percent in January 2024, the best January market share since 2015. This means that 2.234 million people watched ORF 1 at least briefly every day. 2.997 million saw the content from ORF 2 (20.1 percent market share). During prime time from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. alone, 42 percent of Austrians watch one of the ORF TV programs every day.

Overall, in January 2024, the linear ORF station group reached out with a lot of information in around 30 daily information and service programs, sports such as: B. the ski classics in Kitzbühel and Schladming, the European Handball Championships or the Ski Flying World Championships on the Kulm, the New Year’s concert, with fiction such as the start of “School of Champions”, two “country crime novels” and new entertainment formats such as “Clever – the puzzle show” and “Maschek” have a market share of 38.3 percent and a daily reach of 3.860 million viewers, which corresponds to 51.1 percent of the TV population. This means that in January 2024 the ORF group is well above the comparable 10-year average.

The ORF video streams also recorded record usage in January 2024. 545 million minutes were streamed live and on demand by Austrians in January. This means a new high. The significantly longer delivery times for videos on the ORF TVthek and the new platform ORF ON since January, the significant expansion of video content on news.ORF.at and sport.ORF.at, as well as intensively used fictional offerings and sports Highlights (Kitzbühel, Schladming, European Handball Championships) contributed to this strong usage.

ORF General Director Mag. Roland Weißmann: “We made the promise to become even more of an ‘ORF for everyone’ and the people in Austria have accepted this promise very well. Our multitude of digital innovations, such as the children’s channel ORF KIDS or our new streaming platform ORF ON or the massive expansion of content in the TVthek app, are being used very well. The invitation to give feedback brings a large number of constructive feedback, which shows how much we are continuing to build ‘ORF for everyone’ together with the audience. What is particularly pleasing is that our program and content reaches people in all program areas and distribution channels. ORF 1 is currently recording its best January value since 2015. The overall market shares of the ORF TV channels are top. ORF videos have never been streamed so extensively. It turns out that quality is more important to the audience than arguments, because people in Austria are not deterred by the negative reports published about the ORF. Quite the opposite:
Austria trusts our offers and this trust is a big order. In accordance with the new legal requirements, we will offer even more ‘ORF for everyone’ and ask the people in this country to help shape it.”
