Director Harald Sicheritz and leading actor and screenwriter Thomas Mraz gave first insights into the film today, Thursday, March 21, 2024, in the Vienna Café Museum.

Harald Sicheritz: “serious topic without pointing fingers”

“I thought it was wonderful how Klaus Eckel and Thomas Mraz managed to convey a serious topic without pointing fingers and in a way that made you laugh about it. It’s about a person with a group problem – like we all have – between one group, the family, and another who lives things he didn’t know existed and then has to manage both. What we humans are world champions at is managing contradictions.” And further: “I really liked how Thomas Mraz harmonized with his film family. Marleen Lohse is great and the children are really exceptional talents.” He says about the title: “‘Actually we should’ is – at least in Austria – an everyday formulation and attitude.”

Thomas Mraz: “Family comedy in the best sense”

“’Actually we should’ is a family comedy in the best sense about the topic of sustainability, in which a man in his mid-forties, a father and married, realizes that he once had ideals and is now reviving them in a perhaps misguided activism.” And further: “ We didn’t want to take a ‘this is right and this is wrong’ position, but tried to capture the reality of a lot of people’s lives. You wake up and find yourself in a life that just happened.” On the topic of sustainability: “The topic of sustainability has developed extremely since we started working on the film seven years ago. Of course we tried to incorporate current dynamics. The title of the film perfectly reflects one thing, and that is the mood in which our society now lives – a constant ‘actually you should…’ imposed by ourselves or from outside. We actually live in a subjunctive mood, coupled with a bad conscience. I think the title expresses that quite well.”
