Open letter for the release of Julian Assange

The Austrian Journalists Club, together with “Candles for Assange”, is handing over an open letter to the Australian Embassy in Vienna

On February 20th and 21st it will be decided whether Wikileaks founder Julian Assange can appeal against his planned extradition to the USA. The Austrian Journalists Club (ÖJC) sees this as a threat to freedom of the press. Extradition to the US would set a threatening precedent for journalists and publishers worldwide.

The ÖJC, together with the “Candles for Assange Vienna” initiative, has therefore written open letters to the ambassadors of the USA, Great Britain and Australia as well as to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk. The signatories are well-known journalists, cultural workers and representatives of human rights organizations from Austria. The Australian Embassy personally received ÖJC board member Liza Ulitzka and Marie-Odile Dorer from “Candles for Assange” today to hand over the letter. The other open letters were sent by post.

On February 22, 2024, 6:00 p.m., the ÖJC will make the outcome of the hearing the subject of a panel discussion in its press salon. Information and registration at the following link:
