“Venus & Serena – From the Ghetto to Wimbledon” (ORF premiere:
Wednesday, July 24th, 8:15 p.m., ORF 1 and ORF ON)
Venus and Serena Williams are among the best tennis players in the world. The two sisters broke all records in doubles and singles and Serena in particular dominated the world’s top tennis for a long time. But their steep career paths were anything but rosy: Growing up in a ghetto near Los Angeles, the two of them struggled with prejudice, racism and sexism as young African-American girls. They have to fight against critical journalists, smiling opponents and unfair tournament organizing teams. It is only through their fascinating game and their self-confident nature that they make it clear to the tennis world that they are top athletes to be taken seriously. Her father is always at her side, acting as a trainer, manager and mentor for his two daughters since the beginning of their meteoric careers. Venus and Serena show the tennis world that it is not just for the white upper class and become role models for many young women. Sonja Daugers documents the rocky path of the two top athletes – from their less privileged backgrounds all the way to the top of tennis.

Collectibles often cost more than a luxury car or even an entire house. But what is behind this cult? Why are sneakers sold so expensive and which are the most valuable sneakers in the world? The documentary follows Jermaine Jenas, former Premier League footballer and self-proclaimed sneaker addict, from Great Britain to New York in search of the most expensive sneakers of our time.
