“It may be that the EIA assessment notice was issued on the basis of a court decision. Nevertheless, this development is clearly the result of a completely chaotic planning policy that has characterized this project since the beginning,” said the planning spokeswoman for the Vienna People’s Party, local councilor Elisabeth Olischar, in a reply and continued: “The Neos are not allowed to do so again – as with all other issues – change politically, but must act in the spirit of world cultural heritage.”
Today’s excuses from local councilor Selma Arapovic cannot hide the fact that the Neos, as coalition partners, have simply failed to pressure the Vienna SPÖ to take appropriate action. Also emblematic in this context are the statements that the Neos are apparently only “hoping for a development that is compatible with the world cultural heritage” and that they are “sticking to the issue.” They are also shifting responsibility to the residents and citizens’ initiatives who can lodge a complaint.
“One thing is clear: the SPÖ/Neos city government can no longer duck away, but must finally do everything in its power to find a solution that complies with the world cultural heritage,” concluded Olischar.
