Old Danube: New guidance system with exciting audio guide invites you to take a winter walk by the water! | City vienna

25 steles along the Old Danube completely renovated – audio guide ideal companion for a tour!

Vienna (OTS) After the holidays, get out into nature and take a walk with the family? The Old Danube, a natural jewel and traditional leisure paradise on the water, is also an attractive destination in winter. There are wonderful views of the water along the bank, old poplar trees line the paths and spacious meadows with dense trees offer a natural experience just a few minutes from the city center. In addition to traditional rowing clubs and historic baths such as the Gänsehäufel, there are ultra-modern jetties with seating that were built by the City of Vienna for visitors and are constantly being renovated. A system of ledges in the form of steles along the Upper and Lower Old Danube ensures that even those who are not familiar with the area can quickly find their way around. The City of Vienna – Vienna Waters department updated and expanded these steles, which were getting old.

Guidance system with 25 steles ensures orientation

There is an overview plan with details of the current location on each of the 25 new steles. The distance to the nearest public bathing facilities, refreshments, dog areas and toilet facilities can be found at a glance, as can the nearest public transport connection. What’s also new is that the steles are now equipped with QR codes, which provide access to the City of Vienna’s free, exciting audio guide to the Old Danube via the Hearonymus app. Simply download it onto your smartphone and be surprised by the many stories from the past and present about the Old Danube!

Hearonymus audio guide – virtual companion with exciting information

How did the Old Danube actually come about, which plants and animals feel particularly comfortable in and around the water and what is the city of Vienna’s mowing boat fleet all about? The new free guide has been providing the answers to all of these and many other questions about Vienna’s most traditional nature and leisure paradise since summer 2023. The audio guide has a listening time of around two hours and the tour is approx. 13 km long. The guide is available in full length, but also in a split version – either along the Upper or Lower Old Danube. The U1 Alte Donau subway station is recommended as an ideal starting point for the tour. The circular route around the Old Danube is at ground level and can be completed on foot or by bike.

And this is how it works:

Download the Hearonymus app to your smartphone via Google Play or the iOS App Store. Then search for the keyword Alte Donau in the app and download the guide to your cell phone. The downloaded guides are saved on your smartphone – so you can listen to the guide even without an internet connection.
