oecolution austria: Supply chain law is an attack on Europe’s competitiveness

This draft needs to be fundamentally revised – putting human rights in the hands of states and not companies

Vienna (OTS) “The Supply Chain Act also shows once again that what is well-intentioned does not mean well-done. The present draft is a further attack on European competitiveness and requires a fundamental revision. The fact that Austria is now demanding exactly this is an important signal for the Austrian economy and a sensible decision,” comments oecolution managing director Elisabeth Zehetner on today’s announcement on the subject of the supply chain law. At the same time, she advocates for more objectivity: “Observance of human rights is still the responsibility of the states themselves; this cannot be delegated to companies.” Companies already have numerous reporting obligations that put them at a disadvantage in international competition. “The supply chain law would be the next avalanche of bureaucracy that would overwhelm Austrian and European companies with massive and unrealistic reporting obligations; it cannot be implemented in this form under any circumstances,” said Zehetner.

Zehetner emphasizes that the current draft law ignores the realities of small and medium-sized companies in Europe and has far-reaching effects on the necessary scope for climate protection. “We need regulations that promote sustainable business and do not threaten the existence of our companies through excessive bureaucracy. Because without prosperity we cannot afford climate protection measures,” says Zehetner.
