OECD report shows: There is no way around a higher retirement age

Campaign for Intergenerational Justice calls for comprehensive pension reform

The OECD is clear in its analysis and conclusions for Austria’s pension system when it emphasizes in its report that linking retirement age to life expectancy would reduce pension spending while boosting economic growth. The tasks for the next government on this topic are clearly on the table

Chairman of the Generational Justice Campaign Georg Feith and the former chairman of the Old Age Security Commission Walter Pöltner

Vienna (OTS) Even if no party wants to raise the issue of pensions three months before the National Council election, the current OECD country report on Austria is clear: there is no way around raising the retirement age. The chairman of the Generational Justice Campaign Georg Feith and the former chairman of the Old Age Security Commission Walter Pöltner are therefore once again calling for a comprehensive pension reform.

Not only is spending on health, care and pensions constantly rising, but according to the latest forecasts from economic research institutes there is no budgetary scope for additional spending. On the contrary, extensive austerity measures would be necessary. Responsible restraint in the discussion about the next pension adjustment would therefore be the order of the day.

No matter which coalition governs after the next election, comprehensive pension reform will have to find a place in every government program. In the opinion of the Action for Intergenerational Justice, the following points should be included:

  • Rapid adjustment of the actual retirement age to the statutory retirement age
  • Adjusting the statutory retirement age to reflect increasing life expectancy
  • Pension adjustments do not exceed the legal norm
  • Strengthening the second and third pillars
  • Further development of the severance payment into a real pension provision
  • Unification of all pension systems.

The OECD is clear in its analysis and conclusions for Austria’s pension system when it emphasizes in its report that linking retirement age to life expectancy would reduce pension spending while boosting economic growth. The tasks for the next government on this issue are clearly on the table“, emphasize Feith and Pöltner.
