ÖCV: Proposal for basic security for students shows an urgent need for debate

The current aid system hinders performance and is confusing

Especially in times of rising prices, a needs-based and performance-friendly reorganization of the support and aid system for students is essential

ÖCV President Philipp Stadler-Simbürger

Vienna (OTS) The ÖCV is pleased to note that the initiative of uniko chairman Oliver Vitouch has finally initiated a long-overdue debate on the simplification and performance-orientation of student financing. “The complicated and densely woven network of funding and support for students has gaps,” warns ÖCV President Philipp Stadler-Simbürger, adding “The complexity makes the need for action in this area evident.” Young academics and students should be given the best possible support and many people should be given fair access to the university system.

“Funding should always be linked to comprehensible and objective performance criteria. A performance-linked basic security can be one of several models for how we rethink funding in Austria,” continued Stadler-Simbürger. But it is also important that students can use the best options for them to complete their studies. Therefore, in addition to state funding, employment while studying should be made better and easier.

This is all the more important because the increasing need for lifelong learning in an ever faster changing world of work makes it increasingly important that working people in particular also undertake further training. In addition, the current system primarily targets parents’ income, prevents children from earning their own income and pays out contributions that are too low. Socially disadvantaged students are once again disadvantaged and inadequately supported.

Especially in times of rising prices, a needs-based and performance-friendly reorganization of the support and aid system for students is essential“Stadler-Simbürger emphasizes. “It is crucial for us that students are financially secure through a better compatibility of study and work.”

The Austrian Cartell Association (ÖCV) is the largest student and academic association in Austria with over 13,000 members. With its 50 Catholic student associations, it is represented in all major university cities in the country.
