Holidays in Austria are still popular with campers – this is also shown by the camping balance for the 2024 summer season: In total, local camping and pitches recorded around 6.3 million overnight stays from June up to and including September 2024. (Source: Statistics Austria, editing: ÖCC). There was particularly a lot of camping in Austria in August: 2.4 million overnight stays were recorded in that month alone. August 2024 was therefore the strongest month for camping – even compared to previous years.
The summer camping season was again consistently successful this year – however, compared to the previous year in 2023, there was a slight decline in overnight stays. “The minus of around 4.3 percent can be explained, among other things, by heavy rain and floods in September. The figures also show that significantly fewer German campers were found on Austrian campsites in June – this is probably related to the European Football Championship “But it can also be due to the weather. In our own circle of friends and within the camping community, it was observed that many people camped in Germany in June to watch a European Championship game on site,” explains Tomas Mehlmauer, President of the Austrian Camping Club (ÖCC).
Currently: Carinthia and Tyrol are also the most popular camping regions in summer
The most common place for camping was in Carinthia (2,226,134 overnight stays). Tyrol is in second place with 1,575,260 overnight stays. Salzburg (669,161) takes third place, followed by Styria (503,283). Upper Austria had 410,279 overnight stays and Burgenland 388,420 overnight stays. 280,969 overnight stays were counted in Vorarlberg, 227,277 in Lower Austria and 61,082 in Vienna. Most holidaymakers on Austria’s campsites come from Germany (43 percent). Austrians (27 percent) are represented as the second largest group, followed by campers from the Netherlands (16 percent).
Twtl.: Camping in autumn and winter too – tips for the cold season
But camping is not only popular in summer – many campers also use autumn and winter for a holiday close to nature. Lower prices and more peace and quiet at the campsite are usually attractive. “If you want to camp in autumn and winter, you should pay particular attention to the waterproofness and wind resistance of the tent so that you can continue well rested even on stormy and wet days,” says the camping expert.
On cooler days, you will turn up the heating in your camping vehicle. “It is important to heat constantly at a low level and not to let the motorhome or caravan cool down completely in between, otherwise you will use too much energy,” advises the ÖCC expert. And the best heating is of no use if the camping vehicle is not sufficiently insulated – so you should clarify this point in advance, especially when renting a vehicle.
