ÖBB timetable shortening – it once again shows the short-sightedness of Transport Minister Leonore Gewessler!

Graz (OTS)
The recently introduced temporary timetable shortening of the ÖBB in the eastern region has also brought the commuter representatives onto the scene. Peter Amreich, chairman of the Austrian Commuter Initiative, sees confirmation that the climate change will not work overnight. If Transport Minister Gewessler doesn’t even have control over her own company, the ÖBB, which she has headed for 5 years now, how is that supposed to work with public transport in the regional area? Or was their idea: We sell as many climate tickets as possible and hope that commuters will continue to use their private cars.

Amreich is therefore calling on Gewessler to finally listen to experts and approve necessary projects such as expanding the third lane on the A9 south of Graz. Furthermore, commuters need a concrete plan on how they imagine the expansion of public transport in the next 20 to 40 years.

As long as the infrastructure for public transport is not sufficiently developed, owning a vehicle will remain indispensable for many commuters. Amreich also warns against further experiments, such as the idea of abolishing the commuter allowance, especially since around two thirds of commuters still rely on cars. Therefore, support for individual transport is necessary.

This not only affects commuter support, but also the upcoming road projects. Amreich is calling for a rethink in transport policy. Not only on the A9, but in many regions of Austria, commuters and residents are suffering from ASFINAG’s construction halt.

The commuter initiative calls on the Federal Minister to pay more attention to the special mobility needs of the population in rural areas. From the perspective of the commuter initiative, politics is only made for urban areas and drivers have to pay for it at the gas station!
