ÖAMTC: Heavy snow, rain and storms marked the start of the Christmas holidays

Precipitation is concentrated in the north and east of Austria, traffic jams on the A10

Vienna (OTS) “There has been heavy traffic on the transit routes to the south and east since the night hours,” reported the ÖAMTC mobility information early on Saturday morning. Disabilities were made worse by sometimes heavy snowfalls, such as on the southern motorway (A2) in the interchange area. Fallen trees and stuck trucks blocked several roads from Tyrol to Burgenland.

Widespread rainfall made it difficult for drivers to travel on holiday. According to the ÖAMTC, snowfalls caused problems on the roads, especially in the Mühlviertel, in the Buckligen Welt, in the Wechselgebiet and in Mittelburgenland. Mühlviertler Straße (B310) was blocked in area Fourteen because of a truck standing sideways. Accidents repeatedly occurred on the slippery roads, such as in the alternating section of the A2 or the Burgenland Expressway (S31) near Sieggraben. In the already very heavy traffic on the East Motorway (A4) towards Hungary, an accident near Parndorf brought traffic to a standstill. The club subsequently recorded stop-and-go sections up to the border at Nickelsdorf. In Upper Austria, a truck had to be towed away in the early hours of the morning. The Pyhrn Autobahn (A9) was closed in the direction of Linz between Klaus and Inzersdorf.

As expected, holiday traffic on the Tauern Autobahn (A10) caused traffic jams. At around 4:30 a.m. the columns moved south, and there was a traffic jam of up to eight kilometers between Hallein andwerfen.

Storms and snow loads caused numerous roads to be closed throughout Austria due to broken trees or the threat of avalanches. Those affected included Filzen and Dientener Sattel on Hochkönig Straße (B164), Pinzgauer Straße (B311) between Saalfelden and Weißenbach, Erlauftal Straße (B25) in the Hieflau area, but also Geschreibenstein Straße (B56) in Burgenland.

The club recommended finding out about the current road and weather situation before setting off and making sure to take snow chains with you. If there are hindrances on the planned route, non-essential journeys should be postponed.
