Vienna (OTS) – In the last edition of the Ö3 summer talks in “Breakfast with me” (July 14), Chancellor Karl Nehammer (ÖVP) was a guest of Claudia Stöckl.
The fifth Ö3 summer talk took place in Pörtschach am Wörthersee, where Chancellor Karl Nehammer made a weekend stop as part of his federal state tour and met his wife and children after the Ö3 interview. “My first free weekend in two months,” said Nehammer.
At the beginning of the conversation, Karl Nehammer bets the boxing gloves “that I got from one of my great boxing role models Wladimir Klitschko, with the original signature on them.” They should go to a good cause, Nehammer promised Ö3 presenter Claudia Stöckl if he and the ÖVP did not come first in the National Council elections. “Yes, of course I bet on it, I always said, I want to be the first to cross the finish line,” said the ÖVP top candidate and also rejected Herbert Kickl’s request in the Ö3 summer talk two weeks ago to finally say the sentence, If you come in 2nd or 3rd place, you have to waive your right to chancellorship. “I have never let my political opponent force me to do anything. I’ve met so many top athletes and I’m like them: Before the competition, no one thinks about coming second, third or fourth.”
He would rate the mood in the coalition as “in the middle” on a scale of 1 to 10. With his children, who are 14 and 15 years old, he discusses the government’s work for the next generations – for example, that after three years there is still no climate protection law. “Of course it concerns my children, they also have it in class. But they know why the law doesn’t exist yet. Because the Greens are difficult and it’s not as populistically easy as they would like. Nature and environmental protection and economic investments must not be a contradiction.” In the Ö3 summer discussion there was also admiration for Climate Minister Leonore Gewessler. “I admire her for her passion,” said Karl Nehammer, with the follow-up: “But it also creates suffering.”
The 51-year-old ÖVP top candidate, who had a career in the armed forces up to the rank of lieutenant, also spoke about his influences in the Ö3 summer talk: “The Austrian armed forces showed me my limits, but at the same time my performance capabilities. These were physical exercises that were always combined with mental stress tests. How resilient is someone under pressure and are they able to make decisions? You are overloaded in training so that you can then withstand the pressure in the real situation.”
Karl Nehammer also spoke to Claudia Stöckl about his wife Kathi’s professional dilemma as “Chancellor’s Wife”: “My wife has now completed a lot of training, including as a personal trainer. At the moment I am very happy that she is very involved with the children at home. School is a busy topic right now and there will be a good time to get back into work. Hopefully there will then be the possibility that she will not join as ‘Chancellor’s Wife’, because she is an independent, independent personality with decades of professional experience and high qualifications. I would like to take this step for you.”
