Last week, three car drivers, three car passengers, a small truck driver, a motorcycle driver and a tractor driver died in traffic accidents. A serious traffic accident occurred in the morning hours of Thursday, September 26, 2024, in the Bruck-Mürzzuschlag district, Styria, in which a car driver mentioned above was killed. A 23-year-old Romanian driver lost control of the vehicle on a municipal road in a local area, presumably due to excessive speed. He hit a street lamp and subsequently collided with a stone wall. Passersby became aware of the accident due to the loud bang and began to provide first aid. However, the 23-year-old, who was not using a seat belt, died of his injuries at the scene of the accident. During the accident investigation, it was discovered that the 23-year-old Romanian did not have a valid driving license and was driving a friend’s car without his permission. Three of the nine road users who died had an accident at the weekend.
In the previous week, four people died on state roads B and municipal roads and one on a motorway. There were three traffic fatalities in Styria, two in Upper Austria and one each in Carinthia, Tyrol, Vienna and Burgenland.
The presumed main causes of the accident were inattention/distraction in six cases, improper speed in two cases and a health problem on the part of the driver in one case. Six fatal accidents were solo accidents and two traffic fatalities were foreign nationals.
From January 1st to September 29th, 2024, there were 282 traffic deaths on the Austrian road network (provisional number). In the comparable period of 2023 there were 315 and 304 in 2022.
