New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day are high season for our tourism businesses
Vienna (OTS) –

“Especially at the turn of the year, guests from all over the world come to Austria. In the urban area we score points with highlights such as the New Year’s Eve Trail in Vienna, the traditional New Year’s concert by the Vienna Philharmonic, with the large cultural offerings of the Austrian museum landscape and, above all, with the excellent culinary offerings in the many restaurants. In rural regions, winter sports and relaxation are the main travel motives. The breathtaking mountain scenery and our great and wide range of winter sports opportunities play a significant role here. The cable car industry is expecting sales of 1.8 billion euros this winter.

Vienna is almost completely booked and the booking situation in the other federal states is also particularly good at the turn of the year,” says Tourism State Secretary Susanne Kraus-Winkler.

The booking forecasts for New Year’s Eve and New Year’s are currently at the high level of the previous year. Capacity utilization is particularly good at the turn of the year, especially in cities. In addition to the New Year’s celebrations, there is particular demand for culinary and cultural offerings. Guests also appreciate that Austria’s cities are considered particularly safe. In the mountain regions, occupancy remains at a consistently high level between Christmas and January 6th and is characterized by a high proportion of regular guests. Since winter holidays are particularly often spent with families, many tourism businesses score points with their wide range of offerings for children and young people, especially at this time of year.

The economic situation of our guests has improved in almost all markets compared to the previous year, the tendency to save has declined significantly and money, time and desire for a winter holiday in Austria has increased almost everywhere. We are therefore expecting a particularly good winter season in Austria. 71% of our guests come from abroad in winter, accounting for 77% of all overnight stays in the winter season. This shows that tourism has become an important part of the Austrian export economy.

“For many tourism businesses, the New Year period is the busiest phase of the year. The diversity of the tourism value chain is particularly evident at the turn of the year: it is not just gastronomy and hotels that are in high season, but also leisure, art and cultural events. This in turn strengthens regional food producers, retailers and travel agencies,” emphasizes Kraus-Winkler.
