Vienna’s markets are booming – the situation has been so easy for a few years. In the past, the markets were often considered to be “dusted”, so today it is the order of the day to buy food on one of the Viennese markets and enjoy the diverse gastronomic offer. Many markets have become Grätzlzentrum in the districts. The evaluation of the visitors carried out annually by the market office impressively underlines this trend:
And 630,555 people were counted in May 2025 per week. Characterized by the year, this results in approximately 32.8 million customers in Vienna’s markets. This corresponds to an increase of sensational 19.5 % compared to the comparison period of the previous year.
The most popular market with 123,544 visitors a week was again the fountain market in Ottakring. Here you could achieve a frequency increase of almost 22 %. This time the enlarged Viktor Adler Market takes second place in favorites with 86,248 visitors, the Naschmarktl is in third place with 80,497.
The strongest growth records the new enlarged carriage market (+48 %), the Naschmarkt (+30 %), the Viktor-Adler market (+42 %), and also the Schlingermarkt in Floridsdorf, which was able to increase its visitors by 22 %.
“The Viennese love their markets and appreciate the fresh offer. Our joint efforts of the past few years to further increase the quality in the markets have been worthwhile. With the amendment to the market order in 2018, a trend reversal was initiated, core opening times and clear odds for the food trade were an active contribution to further attracting the markets. Not – as before – stands in front of closed doors.
The opening times for the food trade have been expanded to 9 p.m., the gastro is also open on Sundays. The current number of visitors show that we are correct with the measures. I would like to thank the employees of the market for their tireless efforts, ”said City Councilor Ulli Sima, who has been responsible for the Viennese markets since 2015.
With government formation 2025, the responsibilities are now moving to the NEOS.
“The development of the Viennese markets is a real success story and as a progress coalition we have taken many important steps together: we halved the fees for Shaniga Hard, the mandatory night storage was abolished and the Sunday opening made it possible. Five markets on the sample became fixed weekly markets, from the long night of the markets a popular annual highlight. Connect culinary, local supply and community.
Variety of measures increase visitor frequency
A reason for the strong growth in the markets-in addition to the top offer of the standers-can certainly also be found in the improvements in the infrastructure in recent years. New trees were planted on the Brunnenmarkt and Yppenplatz, the cool ambience together with the great offer rated the Time-Travel magazine among the top 50 of the hippest places in Europe. The coolest market in Vienna is currently being built in Foridsdorf. The climate in front of the Schlingermarkt project is to be completed by the end of August with the redesign of the surface, the construction of green oases and above all with the construction of the shadow -giving nexorade and represent another milestone to attract the market. The popular carriage market in Währing was enlarged by another four fixed stands beyond the redesigned Schulgasse, and there are new trees and many cozy seating on the farmers’ market, which is also enlarged. The Viktor-Adler market has been expanded to include additional mobile stands and thanks to new regulations, customers have more selection of popular fruit and vegetable stands thanks to new regulations.
The markets are upgraded
With the new “market room” at Kettenbrückengasse, a new hotspot for regional and local producers is currently being built on the Naschmarkt. The goal is a completely new marker experience with innovative impulses, the popular farmers’ market remains, the forecourt to the new market room is integrated into the redesign. At the same time, the local supply function and the variety of markets are strengthened. A ban on souvenir shops and an “anti-Wasabi nut” regulation were decided, the transition period of which ended in early 2028. Other markets are being redesigned, such as the Volkertmarkt in the 2nd district. The aim is for further greening and shading offensives in Vienna’s markets.
Numerous events in the markets – long night of the markets on August 29th
The events organized by the market office regularly provide great rush. Above all, the long night of the Viennese markets, which will take place for the fourth time on August 29. Halloween and the family festival at the Schlingermarkt or the popular summer market cinemas are already among the classics among the events in Vienna’s markets.
“The market office always comes up with something new to draw attention to our great markets. With the exciting events and the fantastic offer, we are gradually expanding the customer tribe. Freshly food together with a great cultural offer forms a harmonious duo,” explains Marktamt Director Andreas Kutheil.
Gastronomic offer expanded
With the possibility for the Viennese to enjoy the excellent gastro offers in the Viennese markets on Sundays and public holidays, a milestone has been created to attract the markets and the respective Grätzl.
Trial markets were made at fixed weekly markets
The weekly markets tested in the population in recent years have become a success story and now the constant institution. Visitors accepted the markets from the first minute, so that they were subordinate to the market order and were thus converted into regular weekly markets. In addition to the new tree market in the 7th district, the Matznermarkt in the 14th district, the Alsseilenmarkt in the 17th district and the Servitenmarkt on Alsergrund. The MazzuCcomarkt in the Seestadt Aspern also became a fixed part of the Wiener weekly markets with the last amendment to the Vienna market regulations.

Unique in Europe, the market office has been offering a new service for standers since last year. Since then, it has been easier for interested parties to reserve a market stand.
